- Genesis 12:3
I will bless those who bless you and curse those who curse you; and all the families of the earth will be blessed through you.”
Commentary on Genesis 12:32 voices
And I will bless them that bless thee,.... Not the priests only that should bless his children, the children of Israel, as the Targum of Jonathan, but all men of all nations, and of every age, that speak well of him, commend him for his faith and holiness, and tread in his steps, these are blessed with faithful Abraham, Gal 3:
John Gill· Exposition of the Old Testament (1748-1763)Reformed
In thee - In thy posterity, in the Messiah, who shall spring from thee, shall all families of the earth be blessed; for as he shall take on him human nature from the posterity of Abraham, he shall taste death for every man, his Gospel shall be preached throughout the world, and innumerable blessings be derived on all mankind through his death and intercession.
Adam Clarke· Commentary on the Bible, 1832Evangelical
- Genesis 17:14
But if any male is not circumcised, he will be cut off from his people; he has broken My covenant.”
Commentary on Genesis 17:142 voices
Not without reason or by excessive reaction do many find this passage disturbing, in that the Lord should say, "Any uncircumcised male who is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin shall be cut off from his people; he has broken my covenant."
Ambrose of Milan· On Abraham, 397Patristic
And the uncircumcised man child, whose flesh of his foreskin is not circumcised,....
John Gill· Exposition of the Old Testament (1748-1763)Reformed
- Genesis 28:17
And he was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God; this is the gate of heaven!”
Commentary on Genesis 28:172 voices
And he was afraid,....
John Gill· Exposition of the Old Testament (1748-1763)Reformed
How dreadful is this place! - The appearance of the ladder, the angels, and the Divine glory at the top of the ladder, must have left deep, solemn, and even awful impressions on the mind of Jacob; and hence the exclamation in the text, How dreadful is this place!
Adam Clarke· Commentary on the Bible, 1832Evangelical
- Genesis 28:22
And this stone I have set up as a pillar will be God’s house, and of all that You give me I will surely give You a tenth.”
Commentary on Genesis 28:222 voices
And this stone, which I have set for a pillar, shall be God's house,....
John Gill· Exposition of the Old Testament (1748-1763)Reformed
This stone shall be Gods house - That is, (as far as this matter refers to Jacob alone), should I be preserved to return in safety, I shall worship God in this place. And this purpose he fulfilled, for there he built an altar, anointed it with oil, and poured a drink-offering thereon. For a practical use of Jacobs vision, see note on Gen 28:12. On the doctrine of tithes, or an adequate support for the ministers of the Gospel, I shall here register my opinion.
Adam Clarke· Commentary on the Bible, 1832Evangelical
- Genesis 49:10
The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the staff from between his feet, until Shiloh comes and the allegiance of the nations is his.
Commentary on Genesis 49:102 voices
Yes, because they denied the true king, they began to have false kings. And so the patriarch is saying this: The inheritance of an unblemished line of succession, traced through the kings, will be kept among the judges and kings of the Jews, "until he comes for whom it has been reserved," reserved that he may gather together the church of God out of the assembly of all the nations and the devotion of the Gentile peoples.
Ambrose of Milan· On the Blessings of the Patriarchs, 397Patristic
The sceptre shall not depart from Judah,....
John Gill· Exposition of the Old Testament (1748-1763)Reformed
- Exodus 12:3
Tell the whole congregation of Israel that on the tenth day of this month each man must select a lamb for his family, one per household.
Commentary on Exodus 12:32 voices
"The lamb," the Lord says, "must be without blemish. You may take it from either the sheep or the goats." In another place of Holy Writ, it is prescribed that if anyone is unable to keep the Passover in the first month, he is to do so in the second. According to the regulation above, anyone who is unable to sacrifice a lamb may substitute a kid.
Jerome· HOMILY 91, 420Patristic
Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel,....
John Gill· Exposition of the Old Testament (1748-1763)Reformed
- Exodus 12:6
You must keep it until the fourteenth day of the month, when the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel will slaughter the animals at twilight.
Commentary on Exodus 12:62 voices
Why is this lamb offered up in the evening and not during the day? The reason is plain enough, for our Lord and Savior suffered his passion at the close of the ages. So John says in his letter: "Dear children, it is the last hour." Since, moreover, it is the last hour, it is the beginning of night, for day has come to an end. It must be understood, however, that as long as we are in this world, as long as we abide in Egypt, we are not in a clear light but in a dark mist.
Jerome· HOMILY 91, 420Patristic
And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month,....
John Gill· Exposition of the Old Testament (1748-1763)Reformed
- Exodus 12:15
For seven days you must eat unleavened bread. On the first day you are to remove the leaven from your houses. Whoever eats anything leavened from the first day through the seventh must be cut off from Israel.
Commentary on Exodus 12:152 voices
Seven days shall ye eat unleavened bread,....
John Gill· Exposition of the Old Testament (1748-1763)Reformed
Cut off - The penalty inflicted on those who transgressed the command may be accounted for on the ground that it was an act of rebellion; but additional light is thrown upon it by the typical meaning assigned to leaven by our Lord, Mat 16:6.
Albert Barnes· Notes, Explanatory and Practical, on the Old and New Testaments (1832-1869)Evangelical
- Exodus 12:19
For seven days there must be no leaven found in your houses. If anyone eats something leavened, that person, whether a foreigner or native of the land, must be cut off from the congregation of Israel.
Commentary on Exodus 12:192 voices
Seven days there shall be no leaven found in your houses,.....
John Gill· Exposition of the Old Testament (1748-1763)Reformed
Born in the land - A stranger or foreigner might be born in the land, but the word here used means a native of the land, belonging to the country by virtue of descent, that descent being reckoned from Abraham, to whom Canaan was promised as a perpetual inheritance.
Albert Barnes· Notes, Explanatory and Practical, on the Old and New Testaments (1832-1869)Evangelical
- Exodus 12:47
The whole congregation of Israel must celebrate it.
Commentary on Exodus 12:471 voice
All the congregation of Israel shall keep it. The passover, and the feast of unleavened bread only; for a Gentile was first to be circumcised, and be joined to the congregation, and then partake of it, and not before.
John Gill· Exposition of the Old Testament (1748-1763)Reformed
- Exodus 16:1
On the fifteenth day of the second month after they had left the land of Egypt, the whole congregation of Israel set out from Elim and came to the Desert of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai.
Commentary on Exodus 16:12 voices
And they took their journey from Elim,....
John Gill· Exposition of the Old Testament (1748-1763)Reformed
The the wilderness of Sin - The desert tract, called Debbet er Ramleh, extend nearly across the peninsula from the Wady Nasb in a south-easterly direction, between the limestone district of Et Tih and the granite of Sinai. The journey from the station at Elim, or even from that on the Red Sea, could be performed in a day: at that time the route was kept in good condition by the Egyptians.
Albert Barnes· Notes, Explanatory and Practical, on the Old and New Testaments (1832-1869)Evangelical
- Exodus 16:2
And there in the desert they all grumbled against Moses and Aaron.
Commentary on Exodus 16:22 voices
And the whole congregation of the children of Israel murmured,....
John Gill· Exposition of the Old Testament (1748-1763)Reformed
The whole congregation - murmured - This is an additional proof of the degraded state of the minds of this people; See Clarkes note on Exo 13:17. And this very circumstance affords a convincing argument that a people so stupidly carnal could not have been induced to leave Egypt had they not been persuaded so to do by the most evident and striking miracles. Human nature can never be reduced to a more abject state in this world than that in which the body is enthralled by political slavery, and the soul debased by the influence of sin.
Adam Clarke· Commentary on the Bible, 1832Evangelical
- Exodus 16:9
Then Moses said to Aaron, “Tell the whole congregation of Israel, ‘Come before the LORD, for He has heard your grumbling.’”
Commentary on Exodus 16:92 voices
And Moses spake unto Aaron,....
John Gill· Exposition of the Old Testament (1748-1763)Reformed
Come near before the Lord - This has been supposed to refer to some particular place, where the Lord manifested his presence.
Adam Clarke· Commentary on the Bible, 1832Evangelical
- Exodus 16:10
And as Aaron was speaking to the whole congregation of Israel, they looked toward the desert, and there in a cloud the glory of the LORD appeared.
Commentary on Exodus 16:102 voices
And it came to pass, as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the children of Israel,....
John Gill· Exposition of the Old Testament (1748-1763)Reformed
As Aaron spake - So he now became the spokesman or minister of Moses to the Hebrews, as he had been before unto Pharaoh; according to what is written, Exo 7:1, etc.
Adam Clarke· Commentary on the Bible, 1832Evangelical
- Exodus 16:22
On the sixth day, they gathered twice as much food—two omers per person—and all the leaders of the congregation came and reported this to Moses.
Commentary on Exodus 16:222 voices
