The idol - i. e. the Asherah (2Ki 21:7 note), which receives here (and in Eze 8:3, Eze 8:5) the somewhat unusual name of semel, which some regard as a proper name, and compare with the Greek Σεμέλη Semelē.

The image stands in the house where God promised David and Solomon, “I will establish My Name forever”, the promise of 1 Chronicles 28. Verse 8 restates the condition: Israel keeps the land “if only they are careful to do all that I have commanded them through Moses”.
