What Is the Gospel?
“Gospel” means good news. Not good advice, not a set of rules: news, about something God has already done in history, for you. It is told in four movements, and you can be settled with God before you leave this page.

1.God made you, and He loves you
You are not an accident. The God who made everything made you on purpose, in His own image, so that you could know Him.
That is the first thing the Bible says about you, and it never takes it back. The rest of the book is a Father coming after His children.
So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.From page one, the Bible says you bear the image of the God who made you, and so does every other human being.
For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that everyone who believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.The best-known sentence in the Bible, and it puts a price on how much He wanted you back.

The Hebrew word is tselem, and in the ancient world it was a royal word. A king set up his image in a distant province so everyone knew whose territory it was.
Genesis says God set His image in the world, and it is not a statue. It is you. That is where human dignity comes from, and it is why sin is a personal offence and not a technical one.

The Greek is agapē: love that decides, and then pays. John does not measure God’s love by how He feels about you. He measures it by what He handed over.

The break · sin and death
2.Sin cut us off: and every one of us did it
Here is the honest part. Every one of us has done wrong, lied, taken, hated, wanted what was not ours.
The Bible’s word for that is sin, and it is not mainly about rule-breaking. It is a broken relationship with the God who made us.
Sin has a wage, and the wage is death: cut off from God now, and forever if nothing changes.
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,Paul has just walked through the pagan, the moralist, and the religious insider. All three land here.
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.A wage is earned. A gift is not. The whole gospel sits in that one contrast.
But your iniquities have built barriers between you and your God, and your sins have hidden His face from you, so that He does not hear.The problem is not that God is far away. It is that something is standing between.
Trying harder does not close that gap, and a good week does not cancel a debt. That is exactly why the gospel is news, not advice: the next move had to come from God.
Why “all” means all, how Paul builds the caseRomans 1:18 – 3:20
Romans opens by convicting the obvious sinner, then turns on the moral critic who agrees with the verdict, then on the religious man with the Scriptures in his hands. Three different people, one identical conclusion.
It is a courtroom argument, and the point of it is that nobody in the room gets to grade on a curve.
Sin is bigger than the things you didThree Hebrew words
Scripture uses three main words: chattaʾth: missing the mark; ʿawon: crookedness, a bent nature; peshaʿ: rebellion, a deliberate breaking away.
Between them they cover the whole problem: what we do, what we are, and who we have done it against.
We have left undone those things which we ought to have done; and we have done those things which we ought not to have done; and there is no health in us.

3.Jesus died in your place, and rose
God did not send a list of demands. He came Himself.
Jesus of Nazareth: God the Son: lived the life we could not live, and then died the death our sin had earned. On the cross He took your place and paid your debt in full.
And on the third day He rose. Bodily. Publicly. Witnessed. The empty tomb is God’s receipt that the payment was accepted.
But He was pierced for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed.Written roughly seven centuries before the cross: and copied out in the Dead Sea Scrolls before Jesus was born.
But God proves His love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.He did not wait for you to improve. The timing is the proof.
For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that He was buried, that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,Paul is quoting a creed he was handed, the earliest summary of the gospel we possess.
Written down centuries before it happenedIsaiah 53 · Psalm 22
Isaiah 53 describes a servant pierced for other people’s sins, silent before his accusers, buried with a rich man. Psalm 22 describes pierced hands and feet and soldiers casting lots for clothing: centuries before crucifixion was a Roman practice.
The Great Isaiah Scroll from Qumran (about 125 BC) puts that text in our hands from long before the events, which is why the claim can be checked rather than merely believed.
“It is finished”: the last word from the crossJohn 19:30
Tetelestaiwas an accounting word. It was written across a bill when the last of it had been paid, and across a debtor’s certificate when nothing more was owed.
Jesus does not gasp it. John reports it as a shout. It is not “I am finished”: it is “paid in full.”
Why the resurrection is the hinge of everything1 Corinthians 15:3–8
Paul lists the witnesses by name and adds that more than five hundred saw Him at once, “most of whom are still living”: an invitation to go and ask them.
Many historians date that creed to within just a few years of the crucifixion. It is not a legend that had time to grow; it is the earliest thing the church said.

4.Salvation is a gift, you receive it
You cannot earn this. You can only take it.
Grace is God’s undeserved kindness. Faith is the empty hand that receives it: turning from your sin: the Bible calls that repentance: and trusting Jesus personally as Savior and Lord.
It is not a transaction you complete. It is a Person you trust.
For it is by grace you have been saved through faith, and this not from yourselves; it is the gift of God, not by works, so that no one can boast.Grace is the source, faith is the hand, and even the hand is a gift, so no one can boast.
that if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.Mouth and heart together: what you say publicly and what you actually trust.
for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”“Everyone” has no fine print. That includes whatever you are carrying right now.
What “believe” means hereJohn 3:16 · James 2:19
The Greek is pisteuō eis: believing into someone. Not agreeing that a fact is true; leaning your whole weight on a person.
James points out that the demons believe the facts, and shudder. The difference is not information. It is trust.

Metanoia means a change of mind that changes direction. You do not clean yourself up first and then come. You come, and He does the cleaning.

Would you like to receive Him now?
There is nothing magic in a prayer’s words, God reads hearts, not scripts. But if your heart is saying yes, tell Him so right where you are, in words like these:
Lord Jesus, I need You. I have sinned against God, and I cannot save myself. I believe You died on the cross for my sins, and that God raised You from the dead. I turn from my sin, and I trust You alone to save me. Come into my life, be my Savior and my Lord. Thank You for forgiving me and making me a child of God. Amen.
If you prayed that and meant it, the Bible’s word for what just happened is that you were born again. A new life has started, and it does not depend on how you feel this afternoon.
But to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God—Not “might become”: the right to be called a child of God, given the moment you receive Him.
Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away. Behold, the new has come!The old account is closed. This is what God says is true of you now.

Say it out loud to a person you trust: a believing friend, a family member, a pastor. New life is not meant to be a secret.

You need brothers and sisters, and they need you. Visit this week; decide after a month.
What to look for in a church
- The Bible is opened, read, and taught, not just quoted in passing.
- Jesus Christ crucified and risen is the centre of the preaching.
- Believers are baptized and the Lord's Supper is kept.
- People will actually know you: there is somewhere smaller than the Sunday crowd to belong.
- The leaders are accountable to someone, and the money is accounted for openly.

But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name.John states his own purpose: he wrote it so that you would believe.

Is it true?: the evidence
This is a historical claim, so it can be examined like one. Two numbers to start with:
Did Jesus rise from the dead?The room
Four lines of evidence make the case: the empty tomb, the named witnesses, the women who found it first (no one inventing a legend in that culture would have picked women as their witnesses), and the frightened men who were suddenly willing to die for the claim. We lay out the strongest objections too, and answer them.
Has the Bible been changed?The manuscripts
What survives, how the copies are compared, what the real variants are, and why the footnotes in your Bible are a sign of honesty rather than doubt.
