Chapter summary
Covenant sign given. Abram is ninety-nine; the LORD reveals himself as El Shaddai. Abram becomes Abraham (father of many nations); Sarai becomes Sarah; Isaac is promised by name for the next year. Circumcision is instituted as the covenant's sign in the flesh — every male in Abraham's household that day, eight days old thereafter, on pain of being cut off. Abraham laughs at the promise but obeys the sign immediately: ‘in the selfsame day’ was he circumcised with Ishmael and all his house. Paul presses Romans 4 on the timing: righteousness came to Abraham before circumcision, not by it.
