5 notes on this verseThey burnt the house of God - Here was an end to the temple; the most superb and costly edifice ever erected by man. Brake down the wall of Jerusalem - So it ceased to be a fortified city. Burnt all the palaces - So it was no longer a dwelling-place for kings or great men. Destroyed all the goodly vessels - Beat up all the silver and gold into masses, keeping only a few of the finest in their own shape. See 2Ch 36:18.

The king of the Chaldeans puts young men to the sword “in the sanctuary, sparing neither young men nor young women, neither elderly nor infirm”. Chronicles lists in a few lines what Kings tells as narrative. Adam Clarke calls the temple the most costly building ever raised by human hands.

2 Kings 25:8 and 9 and Jeremiah 52:12 and 13 date the burning to the fifth month of Nebuchadnezzar's nineteenth year. John Gill refers to Jeremiah for the details. The house Solomon dedicated stood until this day, and Matthew Henry reads the ruin as the havoc that sin makes.
