Sanctify now yourselves - Compare the marginal reference. Hezekiah follows David’s example, knowing, probably, that the priests had in the preceding time of idolatry contracted many defilements. The “filthiness,” or “uncleanness” 2Ch 29:16, might consist, in part, of mere dust and dirt, in part, of idolatrous objects introduced by Ahaz before he finally shut up the temple 2Ki 16:10-16.

Hezekiah gathers the priests and Levites “in the square on the east side” and gives one charge twice. The order sets the chapter's pattern, the priests reaching the inner house first and the Levites carrying what they find out to the Kidron.

Barnes reads the order to consecrate themselves as David's own charge to the Levites at 1 Chronicles 15:12, given because the priests had contracted defilement. He takes the impurity of the Holy Place as both the dust of long neglect and the objects Ahaz brought in.
