In the fourth year was the foundation laid--The building was begun in the second month of the fourth year and completed in the eighth month of the eleventh year of Solomon's reign, comprising a period of seven and a half years, which is reckoned here in round numbers.

The inner courtyard has “three rows of dressed stone and one row of trimmed cedar beams”, the same pattern as the palace at 7:9-12. The foundation is laid in “the month of Ziv” of Solomon’s fourth year. The temple is finished in “the month of Bul” of his eleventh.

Ziv, the second month, falls in April and May by Adam Clarke's reckoning. Verse 1 dates the same month from the exodus. Clarke reads the years of the reign before the foundation as preparation for the work.
