The penalty changes register at verse 17. Being cut off and bearing iniquity are sentences no human hand is told to carry out. Matthew Henry reads them as guilt left standing against a man never brought to trial.

Leviticus 18:19 forbade this, and 15:24 had treated contact with the flow as seven days of uncleanness. This verse cuts both off, and its wording makes each an actor, he exposing and she uncovering. Matthew Henry applies 1 Thessalonians 4:4 on honor in marriage.
