Study

The featured studies

Every study written for this site, sorted by the kind of thing it teaches. A study of a book reads differently from a study of a word, so each kind keeps its own shape.

Summary

The site carries 1112 featured studies, each taking one of ten kinds, and a kind is the question the study answers rather than the subject it covers. Doctrines is the largest at 366 studies and Places the smallest at 50.

  • 114 ask what a whole book of the Bible says from end to end, and 128 ask what one passage says line by line.
  • 177 ask what happened and what the scene was really like.
  • 366 ask what Scripture teaches on a subject, and 37 ask why Christians read the same texts differently.
  • 126 follow one word or picture wherever Scripture uses it.
  • 89 stand on one life or one people, and 50 on one place.

The dispositions Scripture commands and commends, such as gratitude, each grounded in God's own character. Each value page outlines the value and opens onto studies of its texts, stories, words and practice. Each value opens on its value page where one is built, and on its subject page until then. A value with neither shows its key text and the studies the plan names for it, and its page is planned.

Keep studying

Every study cites the chapters it stands on and the words it turns on. A study is a way into the text and the lexicon.

The roster is the site’s own build manifest, so no study can be missing from it. A study leads its kind when it carries a line of its own and more of the other studies link to it; a register row with no line of its own borrows the first sentence of the study’s own summary. The pictures are public domain: engravings by Gustave Doré from Doré’s English Bible(1866), and paintings held at Wikimedia Commons. Each is named in full on the study’s own page.
