The Gospel's Charter · Romans
The Gospel Argued to the Ground
Romans does not assume the gospel — it argues it, from indictment through acquittal to doxology. God, in the death and resurrection of His Son, both reveals His own justice and freely gives the righteousness no one can earn — justifying the ungodly by faith, Jew and Gentile alike, remaking them by the Spirit, keeping covenant with Israel — so that grace, not human boasting, reigns to the glory of God.

The Argument — seven movements, one case
Romans is a single, tightly-built argument — not a chain of topics. It descends into the depths of the human case, turns on a two-word hinge, and climbs to worship. Two doxologies (11:33–36; 16:25–27) cap the two great movements: Paul worships what he has finished proving.
- Prologue & ThesisRomans 1:1–17
The gospel is God's saving power, revealing 'a righteousness of God from faith unto faith' (Hab 2:4).
- The Universal IndictmentRomans 1:18–3:20
Pagan, moralist, and Jew alike — 'all under sin,' every mouth stopped; no flesh justified by works.
- Justification by FaithRomans 3:21–5:21
'But now' — Christ set forth as a propitiation; Abraham & David the proof; peace, hope, and the two Adams.
- Life in the SpiritRomans 6:1–8:39
Dead to sin, freed from the law, the divided self — then no condemnation, adoption, and no separation (ch. 8, the summit).
- God & IsraelRomans 9:1–11:36
The true seed and sovereign election, Israel's own unbelief, the olive tree, 'all Israel shall be saved' — then doxology.
- The Living SacrificeRomans 12:1–15:13
The 'therefore' of grace: the renewed mind, love as the law's fulfilment, the weak and the strong.
- Ministry & DoxologyRomans 15:14–16:27
Paul's Gentile priesthood, the Jerusalem/Rome/Spain plan, the roll of greetings, and the closing doxology.
Two words turn the whole book from the closed courtroom to the open door: "But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is manifested" — the pivot from indictment to acquittal.
The Romans Road
— the gospel's on-ramp, in four versesChrist in Romans
— not His life narrated, but His death & resurrection interpreted'of the seed of David… declared to be the Son of God… by the resurrection'
Romans 3:25the mercy seat — 'a propitiation… in his blood' (hilastērion)
Romans 5:19the last Adam — 'by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous'
Romans 8:34risen and interceding — 'at the right hand of God'
Romans 10:4'Christ is the end (telos) of the law unto righteousness'
Romans 16:20the serpent-crusher — 'shall bruise Satan under your feet' (Gen 3:15)
The Doctrines
— what Romans holds together that lesser accounts split apartThe righteousness of God
1:17; 3:21–26At once God's own justice (the cross vindicates it) and a gift received by faith — 'that he might be just, and the justifier.'
Justification by faith
3:24–28; 4:3–8God's judicial verdict crediting (logizomai) righteousness to the believing ungodly, 'freely by his grace,' apart from works of the law.
Propitiation — the mercy seat
3:25Christ, in his blood, the true hilastērion where God's real wrath is turned away and God meets the sinner.
The two Adams
5:12–21Sin and death a federal inheritance from Adam, answered by a federal righteousness from the last Adam.
Union with Christ
6:1–11Joined to His death and resurrection, sin's reign already broken — 'reckon yourselves dead unto sin, alive unto God.'
No condemnation & adoption
8:1, 15The Spirit displaces the flesh; the believer receives the Son's own cry, 'Abba, Father.'
God's faithfulness to Israel
11:25–29The hardening partial and temporary; the natural branches grafted back — 'all Israel shall be saved.'
The living sacrifice
12:1–2Grace received becomes life given: the renewed mind, love without hypocrisy, love as the law's fulfilment.
The Golden Chain
— Romans 8:29–30 — five links, the last spoken as done- foreknew
- foreordained
- called
- justified
- glorified
"Whom he foreknew… foreordained… called… justified… glorified." The last link is past tense (edoxasen) though still future — so certain it is spoken as already done.

Contested Points
— every view at full strength, flag primaryJustification — the Reformational reading vs. the New Perspective on Paul
MannaFest flag: Forensic imputation primary (righteousness reckoned to the believing ungodly, 4:5); the NPP's Jew–Gentile recovery is its true outworking, not the whole
The 'I' of Romans 7:14–25
MannaFest flag: The regenerate believer's real war with indwelling sin — a cry ch. 8 answers (Spirit-empowered victory), never a ceiling (the Wesleyan concern honored)
Romans 9–11 — election, sovereignty, responsibility
MannaFest flag: Sovereign electing grace held with genuine human responsibility, never flattened to determinism — which is why Paul ends in doxology, not a system
Propitiation vs. expiation (3:25)
MannaFest flag: Propitiation — Christ turns away God's real wrath (Morris); penal substitution the controlling category, with expiation included
'All Israel shall be saved' (11:26)
MannaFest flag: A still-future national turning of ethnic Israel to her Messiah (the natural branches grafted back), per the premillennial frame
