For this is my blood of the New Testament,.... That is, the red wine in the cup, was an emblem and representation of his precious blood, whereby was exhibited a new dispensation, or administration of the covenant of grace; and by which it was ratified and confirmed; and whereby all the blessings of it, such as peace, pardon, righteousness, and eternal life, come to the people of God: the allusion is to the first covenant, and the book of it being sprinkled with the blood of bulls, and therefore called the blood of the covenant, Exo 24:

THE Lord Jesus Christ was then alive, sitting at the table and yet, pointing to the cup filled with red wine, He said, "This is My blood, which is shed for many." This proves that He could not have intended that the wine was literally His blood. Surely it is no longer necessary to refute the gross and carnal dogma of transubstantiation which is obviously absurd! There sat the living Lord at the supper, with His blood in His veins and, therefore, the wine could not literally be His blood!

The meal on the table

“The first day of Unleavened Bread” places this meal at Passover (Pesach), the spring feast remembering the exodus, kept then as a lamb eaten with unleavened flatbread (matzah) and wine after the day's Temple sacrifice. The bread Jesus broke and the cup He blessed were the feast's own elements; the hymn they sang going out (26:30) would by long custom have been from the Hallel, Psalms 113–118, the psalms sung at Passover. The Last Supper is not a new ceremony dropped into history; it is the exodus meal, taken up and given its fulfillment.
