(Verse 23) But He answering, said: He that dippeth his hand with me in the dish, he shall betray me. Oh, the wondrous patience of the Lord! He had said first: one of you shall betray me. The traitor persists in evil, making it more evident, yet without clearly indicating his name. With the others saddened, holding back their hands, and denying the food to his mouth, with audacity and impudence, by which he was to betray, he even sends his hand into the dish with the master, in order to falsely testify to a clear conscience.

He mentions this, to make the treachery appear the more exceeding sinful. Note, External communion with Christ in holy ordinances is a great aggravation of our falseness to him. It is base ingratitude to dip with Christ in the dish, and yet betray him.

He that dippeth his hand - As the Jews ate the passover a whole family together, it was not convenient for them all to dip their bread in the same dish; they therefore had several little dishes or plates, in which was the juice of the bitter herbs, mentioned Exo 12:8, on different parts of the table; and those who were nigh one of these, dipped their bread in it. As Judas is represented as dipping in the same dish with Christ, it shows that he was either near or opposite to him.

The meal on the table

“The first day of Unleavened Bread” places this meal at Passover (Pesach), the spring feast remembering the exodus, kept then as a lamb eaten with unleavened flatbread (matzah) and wine after the day's Temple sacrifice. The bread Jesus broke and the cup He blessed were the feast's own elements; the hymn they sang going out (26:30) would by long custom have been from the Hallel, Psalms 113–118, the psalms sung at Passover. The Last Supper is not a new ceremony dropped into history; it is the exodus meal, taken up and given its fulfillment.
