And when they had sung an hymn,.... The "Hallell", which the Jews were obliged to sing on the night of the passover; for the passover, they say (l), was טעון הלל, "bound to an hymn". This "Hallell", or song of praise, consisted of six Psalms, the 113th, 114th, 115th, 116th, 117th, and 118th (m): now this they did not sing all at once, but in parts.

And when they had sung a hymn - Υμνησαντες means, probably, no more than a kind of recitative reading or chanting. As to the hymn itself, we know, from the universal consent of Jewish antiquity, that it was composed of Psa 113:1-9, Psa 114:1-8, 115, 116, Psa 117:1-2, and 118, termed by the Jews הלל halel, from הללו־יה halelu-yah, the first word in Psa 113:1-9. These six Psalms were always sung at every paschal solemnity. They sung this great hillel on account of the five great benefits referred to in it; viz. 1. The Exodus from Egypt, Psa 114:

“The first day of Unleavened Bread” places this meal at Passover (Pesach), the spring feast remembering the exodus, kept then as a lamb eaten with unleavened flatbread (matzah) and wine after the day's Temple sacrifice. The bread Jesus broke and the cup He blessed were the feast's own elements; the hymn they sang going out (26:30) would by long custom have been from the Hallel, Psalms 113–118, the psalms sung at Passover. The Last Supper is not a new ceremony dropped into history; it is the exodus meal, taken up and given its fulfillment.
