The prophet walks a stripped orchard looking for one cluster: 'the godly man is perished out of the earth, and there is none upright among men.' Bribed judges, scheming princes, neighbors not to be trusted, and a household turned against itself: 'a man's enemies are the men of his own house,' words Jesus takes up in Matthew 10. Against that, faith: 'when I fall, I shall arise; when I sit in darkness, Jehovah will be a light unto me' (7:8). Walls are rebuilt, borders enlarged, nations shamed. And the book ends on the meaning of Micah's own name: 'Who is a God like unto thee, that pardoneth iniquity… and thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.'
