1 Kings 8:1-2

Solomon summons Israel's elders and tribal heads rather than the whole nation, a statelier gathering than David's own popular procession that brought the ark into Jerusalem at 2 Sam 6:1. The house had stood finished since the eighth month of the prior year at 6:38, yet the dedication waits for the seventh month and the feast of tabernacles, so nearly a year passes before the ark moves from Zion up to Moriah. The site itself carries its own history, since David bought the threshingfloor at 2 Sam 24 and 2 Chr 3:1 names it Mount Moriah, binding Solomon's house to Abraham's altar and to his father's plague offering.

1 Kings 8:3-5

the priests took up the ark: The priests, not the ordinary Levites, carry the ark this time, an honor Wesley and Gill both trace to the law that barred common Levites from the most holy place where it would finally rest. The tabernacle of the congregation and its holy vessels come up with it, so the wilderness sanctuary itself is retired into the new house rather than left standing at Gibeon. The sacrifice offered before the ark is counted in Kings only as too great for number, a first note of the extravagance that runs through the whole dedication.

1 Kings 8:6-8

The ark comes to rest under the wings of the cherubim in the oracle, the most holy place, and the staves are drawn out only far enough to be seen from the holy place just outside, never protruding through the veil. Henry notes their purpose has already changed, guiding the high priest's hand to the mercy seat on the Day of Atonement rather than carrying the ark, since it will never be carried by them again. The closing note, there they are unto this day, places the writer before the first temple's fall, since nothing remained of the staves to describe once it was destroyed.

1 Kings 8:9

Kings states plainly that nothing lay in the ark but the two tables of stone Moses placed there at Horeb, while Heb 9:4 lists the ark itself holding also the golden pot of manna and Aaron's rod that budded. Wesley reads Hebrews loosely, by it rather than strictly within it, in the most holy place before the ark of the testimony. Barnes reads the difference literally, that Solomon, once the ark reached its final resting place, removed the pot and the rod from inside the chest and set them elsewhere in the holy of holies. Both readings hold the same room and the same furniture, and only the chest's exact contents differ between them.

1 Kings 8:10-11

the cloud filled the house: The cloud filling the house and driving the priests from their ministry repeats Ex 40:34-35 in shape and nearly in words, the same glory that kept Moses from entering the finished tabernacle now stopping the priests at the finished temple. Barnes ties the two scenes together directly, the glory the cloud usually veiled now shining out with a brightness mortal men could not bear, exactly as it had at the tabernacle's own dedication. The moment answers Deut 12's promise of a place for the name with an unmistakable sign that the Lord himself has taken up residence, the temple thread reaching its summit here.

1 Kings 8:12-13

Solomon's declaration that the Lord would dwell in the thick darkness echoes Sinai's own cloud at Ex 20:21 and Deut 4:11, and David had already sung of the Lord making darkness his secret place at 2 Sam 22:12. Wesley and the bench read the king's words as reassurance rather than alarm, turning to a priesthood and people struck silent by the darkness to tell them it marks approval, not disfavor. The house Solomon calls settled and everlasting stands in tension with his own later question at verse 27, and the prayer does not smooth that tension over.

1 Kings 8:14-15

Solomon turns from the altar to bless the standing congregation, acting in a priestly office Clarke compares to Aaron's blessing at Num 6:24-26, the king functioning here as more than a builder of houses. His opening words, spake with his mouth and hath with his hand fulfilled it, set the pattern for the whole prayer, every petition that follows measuring a spoken promise against its accomplished fact. Henry calls this the best use of God's mercies, running the stream back to its fountain in the covenant rather than admiring the gift alone.

1 Kings 8:16-18

Solomon recalls that the Lord chose no city for his name from the exodus until he chose David, answering Deuteronomy's repeated formula, the place which the Lord shall choose to put his name, with the plain claim that my name might be therein. The choice of a man precedes the choice of a place, and Jerusalem becomes the site because David is the king rather than the reverse. David's own desire to build, approved in intention though not granted in the act, sets up the promise the next verses record almost word for word from Nathan's oracle.

1 Kings 8:19-21

Verses 19 and 20 recap 2 Sam 7:12-13 almost to the word, thy son that shall come forth out of thy loins, he shall build the house unto my name, and Solomon reads his own reign as that promise's literal discharge. I have set there a place for the ark closes the procession the chapter opened with at verse 1, the ark finally reaching the resting place David was denied the honor of building. Gill notes that the covenant named here is simply the two tables of verse 9, so the ark's contents and the ark's placement are tied together in one sentence.

1 Kings 8:22-24

Solomon stands before the altar and spreads his hands toward heaven, a posture Clarke describes from the parallel in 2 Chr 6:13, mounted on a brazen scaffold and kneeling with hands lifted. Gill reads the altar itself as typical, a fixture always in view during prayer, since through it every sacrifice of prayer and praise becomes acceptable. The opening address, there is no God like thee, who keepest covenant and mercy, borrows Deuteronomy's own vocabulary for the Lord's faithfulness at Deut 7:9, turning the prayer's first sentence into a confession before it becomes a request.

1 Kings 8:25-26

Solomon asks the Lord to keep the specific promise of a man never failing to sit on David's throne, the same word given at 2 Sam 7:16 and echoed later at Ps 132:12, and he attaches a condition, if thy children take heed to their way. That condition stands inside the temple's dedication years before any king breaks it, and 11:12-13 will already show it partly honored and partly withheld for David's sake alone. Gill reads the plea, let thy word be verified, as the same request repeated in other words, out of ardent desire rather than doubt.

1 Kings 8:27

Solomon's own question, will God indeed dwell on the earth, undercuts the very house he has just finished, since the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain thee, how much less this house. Barnes reads it as Solomon holding two convictions together, that the Lord is specially present in the temple and that he is no local or finite deity confined to any single roof. The verse guards every petition that follows from a wrong reading, since the house that hears prayer never claims to hold the God who hears it.

1 Kings 8:28-30

The prayer's hinge is set here, hear thou in heaven becoming the refrain that answers seven petitions still to come, each naming a different trouble and each ending on the same three words. Solomon asks first that the Lord's eyes stay open toward the house night and day, toward the place of which thou hast said, my name shall be there, the promise of verse 16 turned into a standing request. Barnes notes that the Jews always prayed toward the temple wherever they stood, so the house functions as a fixed direction for prayer rather than a boundary on where God can be reached.

1 Kings 8:31-32

The first case is judicial, an oath sworn at the altar to settle a dispute with no witnesses, the practice Wesley locates in the ordinary court procedure of Ex 22:11. Solomon asks the Lord to judge between the two parties himself, condemning the wicked and justifying the righteous exactly as their own conduct deserves. It is the shortest of the seven petitions and the only one that asks for a verdict rather than for mercy, setting the pattern before the harder cases begin.

1 Kings 8:33-34

Defeat before an enemy is read as covenant discipline rather than accident, because they have sinned against thee naming the cause before the consequence is even described. The petition asks only for what genuine turning has always secured in Israel's history, forgiveness and a return to the land, the pattern the book of Judges records again and again. Clarke calls it the second of seven cases Solomon anticipates, each one a rehearsal of trouble the nation has not yet suffered.

1 Kings 8:35-36

The third petition, heaven shut up and no rain because of sin, names in advance the very judgment Elijah will execute by his own word at 17:1, closing heaven for three years before an altar on Carmel opens it again. Wesley pictures heaven as a storehouse in God's own keeping, sealed until he chooses to open it, the same image standing behind Elijah's ministry decades later. The request that follows, teach them the good way, reads the drought as instruction rather than mere punishment, Barnes notes, ongoing correction rather than final vengeance.

1 Kings 8:37-40

The fourth petition gathers famine, pestilence, blasting, mildew, locust and siege into one list, the same catalogue of curses Lev 26 and Deut 28 had already attached to covenant unfaithfulness. Solomon widens the request from the nation as a whole to any man who knows the plague of his own heart, Wesley reading plague there as the sin itself rather than only its penalty, the true sickness beneath every visible one. The petition ends on the Lord's unique knowledge of every heart, thou, even thou only, knowest the hearts of all the children of men, a claim no priest at the altar could make on his own authority.

1 Kings 8:41-43

The fifth petition turns to the stranger that is not of thy people Israel, a Gentile drawn by report of the Lord's great name rather than by birth, and Solomon asks the same hearing for his prayer that he has just asked for Israel's own. Gill points to the Ethiopian eunuch's later visit to Jerusalem as the pattern this verse anticipates by centuries, a foreigner coming for the name's sake alone. Barnes calls Solomon's plea for the stranger even larger and more open than his plea for Israel, its purpose stated outright at verse 43, that all people of the earth may know thy name.

1 Kings 8:44-45

The sixth petition covers Israel's armies sent out to battle by the Lord's own direction, whithersoever thou shalt send them, a qualifier Clarke reads as ruling out any war not undertaken at divine command. Prayer is expected to accompany the campaign, the army turning toward the city and the house even while encamped at a distance, and the Lord is asked simply to maintain their cause. Henry notes the pairing is deliberate, praying should always go along with fighting, the army's success made to rest on its direction rather than its numbers.

1 Kings 8:46-48

The seventh and longest petition assumes what the first six do not, for there is no man that sinneth not, so exile itself is written into the temple's dedication before any king has yet sinned enough to bring it on. The captives are asked only to bethink themselves and repent in a foreign land, and the confession Solomon puts in their mouths, we have sinned, and have done perversely, we have committed wickedness, becomes, Barnes notes, the very form of words Israel actually used once the Babylonian captivity arrived. Return with all their heart and with all their soul asks for the same wholehearted turning the law itself required at Deut 30:2, spoken here more than three centuries before the exile that would test it.

1 Kings 8:49-51

Solomon does not ask that the captivity be shortened but that the captors show compassion, Clarke reading the request as aimed at mercy inside the exile rather than an early end to it. The final ground given is the exodus itself, thy people and thine inheritance, brought out of the furnace of iron, the same phrase Moses used at Deut 4:20 for the ordeal in Egypt. The petition closes the seven-fold list on the same redemption that opened Solomon's whole speech at verse 16, the exodus standing behind every later mercy the prayer asks for.

1 Kings 8:52-53

The prayer's close restates its opening request almost word for word, thine eyes may be open, the same plea made for the house alone at verse 29 now made for every supplication Israel will ever bring. Solomon grounds the whole prayer on Israel's separation from all the peoples of the earth as the Lord's own inheritance, the same election language Moses used when he brought the fathers out of Egypt. The seven petitions have moved from a single trespass to national exile and back again to this one covenant fact underneath all of them.

1 Kings 8:54-55

Solomon rises from a kneeling posture with his hands still spread toward heaven, the physical position Clarke had already described at verse 22 from the Chronicles parallel, held through a prayer Henry calls likely longer than what is recorded here. He turns to bless the congregation a second time, now standing rather than kneeling, and speaks with a loud voice so the whole assembly can hear the turn from petition to public exhortation.

1 Kings 8:56

Blessed be the Lord, that hath given rest unto his people Israel, according to all that he promised, and there hath not failed one word of all his good promise together close the temple prayer with the same claim Joshua made at the conquest's end. Josh 21:45 already said there failed not ought of any good thing which the Lord had spoken unto the house of Israel, all came to pass, and Joshua repeated it again near his own death at 23:14. Gill reads Solomon as consciously recalling Joshua's words, having lived to see an even fuller accomplishment of the same promises in his father's reign and in his own.

1 Kings 8:57-58

Let him not leave us, nor forsake us echoes the charge given to Joshua at Deut 31:6 and 31:8, the Lord not failing or forsaking, now turned from a promise to one man into the whole nation's own request at the temple's dedication. The plea that follows, that he may incline our hearts unto him, asks God to do inwardly what the law could only command outwardly, a request Barnes traces first to David's own psalms rather than to the law of Moses. Gill reads it as the Spirit's own work, inclining the heart to love, fear, and keep every commandment, statute, and judgment already given to the fathers.

1 Kings 8:59-61

Solomon asks that these words stay nigh unto the Lord our God day and night, treating his own prayer as a standing document rather than a single occasion, honored as long as the need continues at all times, as the matter shall require. The purpose stated next reaches past Israel entirely, that all the people of the earth may know that the Lord is God, and that there is none else, the same missionary aim already voiced for the stranger at verses 41 through 43. The charge that closes the dedication, let your heart therefore be perfect with the Lord our God, asks of the whole congregation what the prayer has just asked God to work in them.

1 Kings 8:62-64

The king and all Israel offer sacrifice before the Lord, and Solomon's own peace offerings alone run to twenty-two thousand oxen and a hundred and twenty thousand sheep, numbers Barnes defends as large but not incredible given a congregation the text counts at verse 65 across the whole land. Chronicles adds a detail Kings itself does not state, fire coming down from heaven to consume the offerings at 2 Chr 7:1, a difference the reader should hold rather than read into the Kings text itself. The bronze altar proves too small for the volume of sacrifice, so Solomon hallows the middle of the court for the day's offerings, the same court where a much larger altar of brass is later described at 2 Chr 4:1.

1 Kings 8:65-66

Solomon holds a double feast, seven days and seven days, even fourteen days, joining the new dedication to the already appointed feast of tabernacles that falls in the same seventh month. The congregation gathers from the entering in of Hamath unto the river of Egypt, the northern and southern limits of the promised land already named at Num 34:8 and Josh 13:5, so the assembly pictures the inheritance at its widest extent. On the eighth day the people go home joyful and glad of heart for all the goodness the Lord had done for David his servant, and for Israel his people, the same two names, David and Israel, that opened the chapter's first verse now closing it together.
