Commentary on the Whole Bible (1710)

Judah was not the eldest son of Jacob, yet God chose that tribe to be the ruling tribe; Jacob entailed the sceptre upon it, Gen. xlix. It does not appear that the family of Jesse was the senior house of that tribe; from Judah it is certain that it was not, for Shelah was before Pharez; whether from Nahshon and Salmon is not certain.

on 1 Chronicles 28:5-7

Verse 5 alone in Scripture calls the throne of Israel “the throne of the kingdom of the LORD over Israel”. The title returns in thought at 29:23. In Chronicles the monarchy is the LORD's own throne held in trust, so the promise can outlast every earthly king.
