to its place in the inner sanctuary of the temple
on 1 Kings 8:6-8
The priests set the ark “beneath the wings of the cherubim” in the inner sanctuary. Its poles reach far enough to be seen “from the Holy Place in front of the inner sanctuary”. The words “they are there to this day” place the writer before the first temple fell.

These are the two great cherubim of olive wood Solomon set at 6:23 to 28, standing apart from the small cherubim on the mercy seat. John Gill notes that their wings reached from wall to wall. The ark and its poles lay hidden beneath them.
