5 notes on this verseThe Lord - shall fight for you - In the Targum of Onkelos, it is, the Word of the Lord shall fight for you. In a great number of places the Targums or Chaldee paraphrases use the term מימרא דיי meimera dayeya or Yehovah, the Word of the Lord, exactly in the same way in which St. John uses the term Λογος Logos in the first chapter of his Gospel. Many instances of this have already occurred.

Verse 31 pictures God as a father: "the LORD your God carried you, as a man carries his son". At Acts 13:18 some Greek manuscripts use the Septuagint's word here, carrying as a nurse carries a child. Others read the verb behind "He endured their conduct".

The promise has two parts, God going ahead of the people and God fighting on their behalf. Adam Clarke notes that the Targum of Onkelos renders the second part as the Word of the Lord shall fight for you.
