But as for you, turn ye,.... From the mountain of the Amorites, the border of the land of Canaan: and take your journey into the wilderness, by the way of the Red sea: see Num 14:25. Jarchi says this wilderness was by the side of the Red sea, to the south of Mount Seir, and divided between the Red sea and the mount; so that now they drew to the side of the sea, and compassed Mount Seir, all the south of it, from west to east.

The children said to become plunder at Numbers 14:3 are handed the land at Numbers 14:31 and here. The phrase "did not know good from evil" marks an age beneath responsibility, as at Isaiah 7:15-16.

The order repeats Numbers 14:25, and 2:1 reports that it was carried out. John Gill, following Jarchi, places this wilderness beside the Red Sea to the south of Mount Seir. The people's road now ran around the south of Seir from west to east.
