on Deuteronomy 1:26-28

Verse 26 calls the refusal rebellion "against the command of the LORD". The complaint that follows, "Because the LORD hates us", is the exact reverse of 7:8, "because the LORD loved you".

The complaint was made in the tents, away from Moses and the assembly. It rewrites the exodus itself, treating the rescue from Egypt as a plan to hand Israel to the Amorites. Matthew Henry, writing on verse 26, counts this among the people's invidious reflections on God's goodness.
