Luke22chapter 22

Luke 22:1-2

The feast of unleavened bread drew nigh, which is called the Passover, Luke naming the two feasts as one since by the first century they had merged into a single week-long observance. The chief priests and scribes sought how they might kill him, for they feared the people, the same fear that stayed their hand in the temple two days before now driving them toward a plan that avoids the crowds altogether. The bench reads the timing as itself theological, the true Passover lamb about to be slain during the very feast that commemorated the first lamb's blood on Israel's doorposts.

Luke 22:3-6

Then entered Satan into Judas surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve, Luke naming the spiritual reality beneath the political plot, human treachery and demonic possession acting in the same man without either erasing the other. He communed with the chief priests and captains how he might betray him, and they were glad, and covenanted to give him money, Matthew's Gospel naming the sum as thirty pieces of silver, the price of a slave under the law of Exodus 21:32. The bench notes he then sought opportunity to betray him in the absence of the multitude, the priests' fear of the people from verse 2 now supplying Judas his exact method, a quiet arrest away from the crowds that had shielded Jesus until now.

Luke 22:7-10

Then came the day of unleavened bread, when the passover must be killed, and Jesus sends Peter and John to prepare it, an assignment given to his two closest disciples rather than to Judas, whose treachery was already set in motion. When they ask where he will have it prepared, Jesus answers with a sign rather than an address, a man bearing a pitcher of water will meet them, itself a small marvel since water carrying was ordinarily women's work in that culture, making the man easy to spot and hard to mistake. The bench reads the arrangement as evidence of foreknowledge exercised deliberately, Jesus controlling the exact place of his last meal so that Judas cannot lead the arrest party there ahead of time.

Luke 22:11-13

The disciples are told to say to the goodman of the house, the Master saith unto thee, where is the guestchamber, and he shall shew them a large upper room furnished, spread with cushions and ready for the reclining posture of a formal meal. They went, and found as he had said unto them, and made ready the passover, securing the lamb, unleavened bread, bitter herbs and wine the meal required. The bench reads the householder's instant compliance as evidence he already knew and honored Jesus, an unnamed disciple willing to give up his best room on a feast night when lodging in Jerusalem was at its scarcest.

Luke 22:14-16

When the hour was come, he sat down, and the twelve apostles with him, and said, with desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer, the Hebrew idiom of doubled verb intensifying the longing to its greatest strength, a desire the bench reads as reaching toward the meal's fulfillment rather than merely its enjoyment. I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God, Jesus naming this Passover as his last until a greater one, the meal's ancient deliverance from Egypt about to be completed in a deliverance the Passover had always pointed toward without yet naming. The bench reads his suffering, spoken of here directly to the twelve, as the lens through which the whole meal that follows must be read.

Luke 22:17-18

divide it among yourselves: He took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, take this, and divide it among yourselves, one of several cups in the traditional Passover sequence, taken here before the bread that follows in verse 19. For I say unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come, the same forward-looking vow as verse 16 now attached to the cup, Jesus abstaining from what he offers them as a pledge of a shared future meal in the coming kingdom. The bench reads the two vows together as framing the whole institution that follows, present sharing bound to a promised consummation.

Luke 22:19

He took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, this is my body which is given for you, this do in remembrance of me, the words that found the church's ongoing observance of the Supper. The disputed word is is, and here the standing rule against a house verdict binds hardest of anywhere in the canon: the Roman Catholic and Lutheran traditions read a real presence in some form, transubstantiation or sacramental union, while the Reformed and Zwinglian traditions read a memorial sign, this represents or signifies, each tradition claiming serious exegetical and historical support and named here without a verdict pressed on the reader. This do in remembrance of me is Luke and Paul's own wording, absent from Matthew and Mark, and every tradition agrees at minimum that continued remembrance is commanded, whatever more is held about the elements themselves.

Luke 22:20

Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, this cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you, language reaching directly back to Jeremiah 31:31's promise of a new covenant and to Exodus 24:8's covenant blood thrown on Israel at Sinai. The standing textual note applies here as it does at 22:43-44 and 23:34: verses 19b-20, from this do in remembrance of me through the end of verse 20, are the longer text found in the majority of manuscripts and read at the Supper's institution across nearly the whole of church history, though a small number of early Western witnesses lack them, and the received text is presented here at full strength with that evidence named beside it. Shed for you states the blood's purpose as substitutionary and covenantal at once, the new testament sealed in the very blood about to be spilled on the following day.

Luke 22:21-23

But, behold, the hand of him that betrayeth me is with me on the table, Judas reclining and even eating from the same dish at the very moment the new covenant is announced, an intimacy the bench reads as sharpening rather than softening the betrayal. Truly the Son of man goeth, as it was determined, but woe unto that man by whom he is betrayed, divine sovereignty and human guilt held together without either canceling the other, the cross both foreordained and freely chosen against by Judas. They began to enquire among themselves which of them it was, each disciple's honest self-doubt, the bench notes, a healthier response than confidence would have been, since none of them yet knew his own heart's capacity for failure that same night.

Luke 22:24-27

There was also a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the greatest, the dispute erupting at the very table where Jesus has just spoken of his own body given and blood shed, a contrast the bench reads as almost unbearable in its timing. He answers by naming the world's pattern first, the kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship, and they that exercise authority are called benefactors, flattering titles masking domination, but ye shall not be so, he that is greatest among you let him be as the younger, and he that is chief as he that doth serve. For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth, I am among you as he that serveth, Jesus stating his own example as the argument's final proof, the very meal he is serving them at that table the visible form of the principle he teaches.

Luke 22:28-30

Ye are they which have continued with me in my temptations, Jesus commending the twelve for their loyalty even as their argument over greatness has just exposed how far they still had to grow, grace naming the faithfulness that was real alongside the flaws that were also real. I appoint unto you a kingdom, as my Father hath appointed unto me, the same verb of appointment binding the Son's own kingdom to what he now grants them, a delegated inheritance rather than a rival one. That ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel, the bench reading this as a specific promise to the twelve regarding Israel's future rather than the church generally, a promise standing alongside 21:24's restoration hinge without either being flattened into the other.

Luke 22:31-32

Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat, the doubled name signaling urgency, and the pronoun you in the Greek is plural, the enemy's request aimed at the whole company though the warning that follows singles out Peter by name. But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not, the singular now Peter alone, Jesus' intercession the true reason Peter's coming failure will end in restoration rather than ruin, a specific, named prayer offered before the fall it anticipates. And when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren, the fall already assumed as certain even as the recovery beyond it is promised, Peter's future ministry to others resting on the very weakness about to be exposed.

Luke 22:33-34

Lord, I am ready to go with thee, both into prison, and to death, Peter's protest sincere rather than boastful in the bench's reading, a real love overestimating its own strength rather than empty pride. I tell thee, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, before that thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me, Jesus naming the exact number and the exact timeframe with a precision that leaves Peter no room to explain the failure away when it comes. The bench notes the prophecy is not a condemnation delivered in anger but a warning delivered in the same breath as the promise of intercession just given, mercy and honesty held together.

Luke 22:35-38

When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye any thing, Jesus recalling the mission of chapter 9 and 10 where provision was supplied miraculously, and they said, nothing, confirming the point before he makes the contrast. But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip, and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment and buy one, language the bench reads as figurative warning of the coming hostility the disciples are about to face rather than a literal command to arm for combat, since Jesus rebukes the sword's actual use minutes later at verse 51. For this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, and he was reckoned among the transgressors, Isaiah 53:12 quoted by Jesus of himself, one of the Gospels' most direct Servant self-identifications, and when the disciples answer, Lord, behold, here are two swords, he cuts the conversation off, it is enough, a phrase most commentators read as closing the subject rather than approving the count.

Luke 22:39-40

He came out, and went, as he was wont, to the mount of Olives, Luke noting the habitual pattern of chapter 21:37 now becoming the setting for the passion's darkest hour, and his disciples also followed him, still present even as their strength is about to fail. When he was at the place, he said unto them, pray that ye enter not into temptation, the same warning given twice more before the night ends, at verse 46 and implicitly in Peter's later fall, the one command that could have prevented what follows. The bench reads the instruction as addressed as much to Peter's coming denial as to the general danger of the hour, prayer offered as the one resource sufficient against a testing already named.

Luke 22:41-42

He was withdrawn from them about a stone's cast, and kneeled down, and prayed, father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me, the cup a recurring biblical image of God's wrath, Psalm 75:8 and Isaiah 51:17 among its uses, so the request names exactly what Gethsemane's dread concerns, the coming bearing of divine judgment rather than merely physical death. Nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done, the prayer's real content, the bench notes, is not the request's denial but the will beneath it, human will fully engaged and fully yielded in the same breath, the pattern Jesus taught the disciples to pray, thy will be done, now lived out at its point of greatest cost. The honesty of the request and the completeness of the submission stand together without either weakening the other.

Luke 22:43-44

There appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him, and being in an agony he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground, a condition medicine calls hematidrosis, capillaries under extreme distress rupturing into the sweat glands, a detail the bench reads as consistent with the physician Luke's own careful observation of the body under mortal anguish. As at 20:36's angels and 21:20-24, the textual note is given honestly: these two verses are present in the majority of ancient manuscripts and were known and cited already in the second century by Justin Martyr and Irenaeus, though a number of early witnesses, mostly Alexandrian, omit them, and the received text is presented here at full strength with that evidence stated plainly. The angel's strengthening and the agony's intensity together picture the true cost of the cup Jesus has just accepted, help given without the trial being removed.

Luke 22:45-46

When he rose up from prayer, and was come to his disciples, he found them sleeping for sorrow, Luke alone naming sorrow rather than mere weariness as the sleep's cause, grief itself proving exhausting even before the arrest has come. Why sleep ye, rise and pray, lest ye enter into temptation, the exact command of verse 40 repeated word for word, the disciples' failure to keep it about to produce the very fall it was meant to prevent within the hour. The bench reads the repetition as deliberate on Luke's part, the warning given plainly twice so that no reader can call Peter's coming denial a surprise sprung on him without notice.

Luke 22:47-48

While he yet spake, behold a multitude, and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them, and drew near unto Jesus to kiss him, the customary greeting between a disciple and a rabbi turned into the arrest's own signal, an intimacy weaponized. But Jesus said unto him, Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss, the question naming both the deed and its title in one breath, Son of man the very title Jesus has used of his own suffering throughout the passion narrative now spoken to the man delivering him to it. The bench notes Jesus still calls him by name, the address neither cold nor merely accusing but a final appeal even at the moment of betrayal's completion.

Luke 22:49-51

When they which were about him saw what would follow, they said, Lord, shall we smite with the sword, the two swords of verse 38 now in play exactly as Jesus had discouraged, and one of them, John's Gospel names Peter, smote the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear. Jesus answered and said, suffer ye thus far, and he touched his ear, and healed him, Luke the physician alone recording the healing, Jesus performing his last miracle before the cross on the very man come to arrest him. The bench reads the healing as the passion's own commentary on the sword drawn in his defense, mercy extended even at the moment of his own greatest danger, and the arrest proceeding regardless.

Luke 22:52-53

Then Jesus said unto the chief priests, and captains of the temple, and the elders, which were come to him, be ye come out, as against a thief, with swords and staves, the nighttime raid contrasted with his own daily, open teaching in the temple where they never once laid hands on him. When I was daily with you in the temple, ye stretched forth no hands against me, but this is your hour, and the power of darkness, the arrest's timing named as no accident, cowardice choosing darkness because it could not face him in the light. The bench reads the power of darkness as naming the true adversary behind the human plot, Satan's entry into Judas at verse 3 now reaching its intended hour, permitted rather than unopposed.

Luke 22:54

Then took they him, and led him, and brought him into the high priest's house, and Peter followed afar off, the phrase the bench reads as the whole coming denial compressed into four words, distance already opening between resolve and courage before a single question has been asked. The high priest's house was Annas and then Caiaphas, father-in-law and son-in-law sharing the office's real power under Rome's appointment, and the courtyard Peter now enters is where his three denials will take place before dawn. Following at all, even afar off, still shows a loyalty the other disciples' flight did not match, a mixed picture the bench declines to flatten into simple cowardice.

Luke 22:55-57

When they had kindled a fire in the midst of the hall, and were set down together, Peter sat down among them, the ordinary warmth of a shared fire the setting for his first test rather than any formal interrogation. A certain maid beheld him as he sat by the fire, and said, this man was also with him, a servant girl's casual remark rather than an official accusation, and he denied him, saying, woman, I know him not, the very man who swore readiness for prison and death now denying acquaintance to a household servant. The bench reads the mismatch between the threat, a girl's passing comment, and the response, flat denial, as the measure of how completely fear had already overtaken the courage promised at verse 33.

Luke 22:58-60

After a little while another saw him, and said, thou art also of them, and Peter said, man, I am not, the second denial following the same pattern as the first, a bystander's remark met with flat rejection. About the space of one hour after, another confidently affirmed, of a truth this fellow also was with him, for he is a Galilean, the accent Mark and Matthew both note as the giveaway, and Peter said, man, I know not what thou sayest, and immediately, while he yet spake, the cock crew, the sign Jesus had named exactly at verse 34 arriving at the precise moment the third denial leaves his mouth. The bench notes the hour's gap between the second and third denials, Peter given time to reconsider and choosing instead to compound the lie under greater pressure.

Luke 22:61-62

And the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter, a detail Luke alone gives, Jesus somewhere within sight across the courtyard even during his own trial, the timing of the look precisely coinciding with the cock's crow and the third denial's last word. Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said, before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice, memory doing what the warning alone could not, and Peter went out, and wept bitterly, grief breaking through exactly where fear had won only moments before. The bench reads the look as neither condemnation nor mere sorrow but the same gaze that had called Peter from his nets, silent and sufficient to shatter the denial's hold the moment it meets him.

Luke 22:63-65

The men that held Jesus mocked him, and smote him, and when they had blindfolded him, they struck him on the face, and asked him, prophesy, who is it that smote thee, turning his own prophetic office into the game's cruel punchline, the men who claimed to await a prophet abusing the one who actually was one. Many other things blasphemously spake they against him, Luke summarizing rather than cataloguing further abuse, the guards' contempt for the man already condemned in their minds well before any formal trial has taken place. The bench reads the mockery as fulfilling the very prophecy Jesus had just quoted at verse 37, reckoned among the transgressors, treated already as the criminal his accusers mean to prove him.

Luke 22:66-68

As soon as it was day, the elders of the people and the chief priests and the scribes came together, and led him into their council, the full Sanhedrin now convening for a formal daylight session after the night's irregular proceedings before Annas and Caiaphas. Art thou the Christ, tell us, and he said unto them, if I tell you, ye will not believe, and if I also ask you, ye will not answer me, nor let me go, Jesus refusing to play a rigged game whose verdict was decided before the question was asked, the bench noting the council had already sought false witness against him in the night, per the other Gospels' fuller account. His refusal is not evasion but a refusal to dignify a mock trial with the pretense that the answer was actually being weighed.

Luke 22:69-71

Hereafter shall the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God, Jesus answering their trap with the very claim they were fishing for, Daniel 7:13-14 and Psalm 110:1 fused into one sentence before the one body with authority to judge blasphemy. Then said they all, art thou then the Son of God, and he said unto them, ye say that I am, an answer the bench reads as an affirmation rather than an evasion, the Greek idiom carrying the force of yes, it is as you say, which is exactly how the council receives it. What need we any further witness, for we ourselves have heard of his own mouth, the council closing the case on the strength of his own testimony, the very confession that will now carry him to Pilate and to the cross.
