Basil of Caesarea

HOMILY ON PSALM 29:4 · Written before 379.

He himself permits the suffering which he again restores. The One who strikes is the One who heals. The afflictions precede in order that the graces may be lasting. Only then do we exert ourselves exceedingly for the preservation of what has been given.

on Deuteronomy 32:39-40

Hannah says the same thing at 1 Samuel 2:6, the Lord killeth and maketh alive, and Isaiah 45:7 states it in the same shape. The lifted hand is the gesture of an oath, used by Abram at Genesis 14:22, and here God swears by his own life because there is nothing higher to swear by, which is the point Hebrews 6:13 makes of the promise to Abraham. Revelation 10:5-6 has an angel lift a hand and swear by him that liveth for ever and ever.
