Luke9chapter 9

Luke 9:1-2

Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases, delegated authority rather than a borrowed trick, the same works Jesus has been doing now committed to ordinary men. He sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick, word and work sent out together as they were given together in his own ministry. The bench reads this first commissioning as the seed of the apostolic pattern the church still follows, proclamation and compassion never separated in the sending.

Luke 9:3-6

Take nothing for the road, neither staves, nor scrip, neither bread, neither money, nor two coats apiece, an austerity the bench reads as training in dependence for a mission meant to be brief and urgent rather than a permanent rule for every later age of the church. Whatsoever house ye enter into, there abide, and thence depart forbids restless moving from house to house seeking better lodging, and the shaking off of dust for a testimony against a rejecting town borrows Israel's own gesture of leaving Gentile soil, turned now against towns that refuse their own Messiah's messengers. They departed, and went through the towns, preaching the gospel, and healing every where, obedience following instruction without recorded complaint.

Luke 9:7-9

Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by him, and was perplexed, for some said John was risen from the dead, others that Elias had appeared, and others that one of the old prophets was risen again, the popular guesswork already circling the identity question the chapter will press harder at Caesarea Philippi. Herod said, John have I beheaded, but who is this, of whom I hear such things, a murderer's own uneasy conscience naming the man he killed before naming the one he cannot categorize. He desired to see him, a wish granted only at the passion, when Herod's curiosity finally meets a silent Christ who has nothing left to say to him.

Luke 9:10-11

The apostles, when they were returned, told him all that they had done, the mission of the opening verses now reported back, and he took them aside privately into a desert place belonging to Bethsaida, the ordinary rhythm of withdrawal after labor this Gospel keeps returning to. The people, when they knew it, followed him, and rather than resenting the lost retreat, he received them, and spake unto them of the kingdom of God, and healed them that had need of healing. The bench notes the pattern, retreat sought and interrupted, mercy answering the interruption rather than protecting the plan.

Luke 9:12-14

When the day began to wear away, the twelve came and said, Send the multitude away, that they may lodge and get victuals, for we are here in a desert place, a reasonable logistical proposal met with an answer that turns the problem back on them, Give ye them to eat. Five loaves and two fishes stand against five thousand men, the disciples' own arithmetic stated to show how impossible obedience looks before the miracle. Make them sit down by fifties in a company orders the crowd for what is coming, the bench reading the deliberate seating as evidence the feeding was meant to be witnessed in an orderly, countable way rather than a confused scramble.

Luke 9:15-17

They did so, and made them all sit down, and Jesus took the five loaves and the two fishes, looked up to heaven, blessed them, brake, and gave to the disciples to set before the multitude, the same fourfold action, take, bless, break, give, that will recur at the table in the upper room. They did eat, and were all filled, and twelve baskets of fragments remained, one basket for every disciple who had just declared the supply impossible, the abundance measured precisely against their own doubt. The bench sets the miracle beside Elisha feeding a hundred men from twenty loaves with bread left over, the greater prophet answering the same need on a far larger scale.

Luke 9:18-20

As he was alone praying, his disciples with him, he asks, Whom say the people that I am, prayer again the setting for the chapter's turning questions. They answer with the crowd's guesses already heard from Herod, John the Baptist, Elias, or one of the old prophets risen again, categories that honor him without reaching high enough. But whom say ye that I am presses the question personally, and Peter answers for the twelve, The Christ of God, the confession this Gospel has been building toward since the angel's own announcement in chapter one.

Luke 9:21-22

He straitly charged them, and commanded them to tell no man that thing, the confession true but its public timing not yet his to give, since a Messiah announced before the cross invites exactly the political expectation he will not fulfill. Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day, the first of this Gospel's three passion predictions, spoken the moment the right confession is made. The bench reads the sequence as deliberate, the true title given only so the true meaning of that title, suffering before glory, can immediately follow it.

Luke 9:23-25

If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me, the Lord's own path in the previous verse now set as the shape of every disciple's path, Luke alone adding daily to press it beyond a single dramatic moment. Whosoever will save his life shall lose it, but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it states the paradox plainly, and what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away, presses the arithmetic of eternity against any bargain the world offers. The bench reads self-denial here as losing the right to run one's own life, not mere asceticism, the cross an instrument of death carried toward a destination, not a decoration.

Luke 9:26-27

Whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father's, and of the holy angels, the cross of the previous verses now set against the far side of the same story, coming glory rather than present shame. I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God follows immediately, and the bench reads the transfiguration eight days later as this saying's own fulfillment, three of that company given an early sight of the glory just promised. Other readings apply the saying more broadly to the church's later growth or to the resurrection, and the positions are held without a verdict forced on the text.

Luke 9:28-31

About an eight days after these sayings, he took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray, prayer again the doorway into a chapter-turning event, as at the baptism and before choosing the twelve. As he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering, and there talked with him two men, Moses and Elias, the law and the prophets both present at once. They appeared in glory, and spake of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem, the Greek word for departure standing in Luke's own text, the cross named here as a mission accomplished rather than an accident suffered.

Luke 9:32-33

Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep, and when they were awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him, the same drowsiness that will return at Gethsemane, glory and agony both nearly missed by weary eyes. As they departed from him, Peter said, Master, it is good for us to be here, let us make three tabernacles, one for thee, one for Moses, one for Elias, an offer Luke himself corrects in the same breath, not knowing what he said. The bench reads Peter's proposal as an honest wish to hold the moment rather than let it pass, and its error as leveling Jesus with Moses and Elias instead of confessing him above them.

Luke 9:34-36

While he thus spake, there came a cloud, and overshadowed them, the same cloud of glory that once filled the tabernacle and the temple, and they feared as they entered into it. A voice out of the cloud says, This is my beloved Son: hear him, the Father speaking as at the baptism, the last two words answering Peter's tabernacles directly and echoing Moses' own promise of a prophet like himself whom Israel must hear. When the voice was past, Jesus was found alone, the law and the prophets having yielded the last word to him, and the three kept it close, telling no man in those days what they had seen.

Luke 9:37-40

On the next day, when they were come down from the hill, much people met him, and a man of the company cried out, Master, I beseech thee, look upon my son, for he is mine only child, the mountain's glory meeting immediately the valley's ordinary suffering. A spirit taketh him, and he suddenly crieth out, and it teareth him that he foameth again, and bruising him hardly departeth from him, a description the bench reads as consistent with violent seizure while the text names the cause as spiritual rather than merely medical. I besought thy disciples to cast him out, and they could not, the nine left behind having failed exactly where the three on the mountain have just seen glory.

Luke 9:41-43

O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you, and suffer you, Jesus answers, a rebuke the bench reads as aimed wider than the failed disciples alone, at a crowd and an age slow to believe even after so much evidence. Bring thy son hither, and as he was yet a coming, the devil threw him down and tare him, and Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child, and delivered him again to his father, the same giving-back clause that once closed the raising at Nain. They were all amazed at the mighty power of God, the crowd's wonder framing what comes next as a deliberate interruption of celebration.

Luke 9:44-45

While every one wondered at all things Jesus did, he said to his disciples, Let these sayings sink down into your ears, for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men, the second passion prediction spoken deliberately against the grain of the crowd's excitement rather than riding on it. They understood not this saying, and it was hid from them, that they perceived it not, and they feared to ask him of that saying, three clauses stacking the disciples' incomprehension without excusing it or explaining it away. The bench reads their fear of asking as itself telling, a suspicion the answer would be unwelcome kept them from the question that might have prepared them for what was coming.

Luke 9:46-48

Then there arose a reasoning among them, which of them should be greatest, ambition surfacing immediately after a prediction of suffering they had just failed to understand, and Jesus, perceiving the thought of their heart, took a child, and set him by him. Whosoever shall receive this child in my name receiveth me, and whosoever shall receive me receiveth him that sent me, greatness measured now by welcome given to the small and dependent rather than by rank claimed. For he that is least among you all, the same shall be great, the bench reading the child as a living illustration rather than a lesson about children specifically, humility and service the real subject.

Luke 9:49-50

John answered, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name, and we forbad him, because he followeth not with us, the disciples policing a boundary of belonging immediately after being corrected for arguing about rank. Jesus answers, Forbid him not: for he that is not against us is for us, refusing to make party membership the test of a genuine work done in his name. The bench reads the saying alongside its opposite, he that is not with me is against me, as governing two different situations rather than contradicting itself, active opposition in one case and unaffiliated but real allegiance in the other.

Luke 9:51

When the time was come that he should be received up, he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem, a single sentence that turns the whole Gospel, the ministry in Galilee now behind him and ten chapters of travel toward the cross beginning at this verse. The bench reads received up as looking past the crucifixion to the ascension, the entire course undertaken in view of its far side rather than only its immediate cost, and stedfastly set his face as Luke's own rendering of a Hebrew idiom of fixed resolve, the same posture Isaiah's servant claims of himself. Every later restatement of the road ahead, at chapters thirteen, seventeen, eighteen, and nineteen, answers back to this one verse.

Luke 9:52-56

a village of the Samaritans: He sent messengers before his face into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him, and they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem, old hostility over the rival temple refusing a pilgrim bound for the one Samaritans rejected. James and John ask, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did, reaching for the same fire Elijah once called down on soldiers, and he turned, and rebuked them, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of. For the Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them, a flat correction of zeal that had reached for judgment instead of mission, and they went to another village rather than forcing the first.

Luke 9:57-58

As they went in the way, a certain man says, Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest, an offer that sounds complete until Jesus answers it. Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head, a plain statement of the cost this volunteer has not yet counted, homelessness rather than comfort the actual condition of following him now. The bench reads the answer as neither a rejection nor an acceptance recorded, the man's response left untold, the challenge itself doing the work.

Luke 9:59-60

He said to another, Follow me, but he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father, a request custom would call reasonable and even pious. Jesus answers, Let the dead bury their dead, but go thou and preach the kingdom of God, the bench reading the hard saying as addressed to a delay rather than to grief itself, since the man's father, on the ordinary reading, was not yet dead but the request asked leave to wait out an unclear span until he was. The kingdom's claim is set above even a son's chief filial duty, the sharpest of the three sayings in this closing set.

Luke 9:61-62

Another also said, Lord, I will follow thee, but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house, a request that even echoes Elisha's own farewell feast before he followed Elijah. Jesus answers, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God, the figure drawn from a farmer's own furrow, a backward glance enough to spoil a straight line. The bench reads the three would-be followers together as a rising scale of cost, comfort, family duty, and finally divided attention, each answer stripping away one more reason to delay.
