Jeremiah 51:1-6

A destroying wind and fanners that empty her land turn the siege into a winnowing, the same threshing-floor image the chapter will return to, Babylon blown like chaff from her own grain. Verse 5 breaks in with reassurance inside the judgment, Israel hath not been forsaken, nor Judah of his God, though their own land was filled with sin, guilt owned without the promise being withdrawn. The call to flee is addressed to each soul separately, deliver every man his soul, this is the time of the Lord's vengeance, he will render unto her a recompence.

Jeremiah 51:7-10

Babylon is called a golden cup in the Lord's hand that made all the earth drunken, the empire itself the Lord's own instrument of judgment on the nations even while she is now the one being judged, the same paradox of an appointed rod later broken for its pride that the book has already used of Assyria. The nations who drank from her testify to her own case, we would have healed Babylon, but she is not healed, an incurable fall stated by the very peoples she intoxicated. Verse 10 turns the report toward Zion, the Lord hath brought forth our righteousness, the exiles' vindication announced before the city that will hear it.

Jeremiah 51:11-14

the spirit of the kings of the Medes: The agent is now named rather than left as a nation out of the north, the kings of the Medes, the coalition history remembers as the force that answered to Cyrus and ended the empire in 539 BC. Babylon's own preparations, watch strong, watchmen set, ambushes laid, are recorded only to show them useless against what the Lord himself hath devised and done. The measure of thy covetousness (v13) reaches back to the many waters, the canals and river that made Babylon rich and are named again as the very thing that will let her enemies in.

Jeremiah 51:15-19

This doxology repeats 10:12-16 within the same book almost word for word, the maker of earth, establisher of the world, set deliberately against the molten images that follow it, in the time of their visitation they shall perish. Every founder, every craftsman of an idol, is called brutish, his own work confounded by what his hands have made, no breath in them the verdict the chapter has already reached about Bel and Merodach. Jacob is not like them, he is the former of all things, and Israel the rod of his inheritance, the true portion set against the false ones the chapter has spent itself breaking.

Jeremiah 51:20-23

The address turns to an instrument called battle axe and weapons of war, and the bench names the readings rather than settling one, Babylon herself recalled as the hammer of the whole earth from chapter 50 now spoken to ironically, or the Medes as the newly raised agent the previous unit has just named. The ninefold list that follows, nations and kingdoms, horse and rider, chariot and rider, man and woman, old and young, shepherd and flock, husbandman and yoke, captains and rulers, sweeps through every ordinary category a settled land depends on. Whichever hand held the axe, the text credits the breaking to the one who names the instrument, with thee will I break in pieces, repeated nine times.

Jeremiah 51:24-29

The reckoning is stated as public and exact, in your sight, all their evil that they have done in Zion rendered back to them in the same measure. Babylon is called a destroying mountain that the Lord will roll down from the rocks and burn, no stone ever taken from her again for a corner or a foundation, a permanence the bench sets against the ordinary hope of rebuilding a ruin. The nations summoned to the siege are named as real peoples, Ararat, Minni and Ashchenaz, Armenia, Mannea and the Scythian tribes of the north, history's own armies called up for the Lord's purpose.

Jeremiah 51:30-33

Babylon's own soldiers give up, remaining in their holds, become as women, the same collapse of nerve the chapter has already pronounced on Chaldea's mighty men. Runners cross each other bearing the same report, the city is taken at one end before the rest of it knows, which the bench sets beside the ancient accounts of a city so vast that its center kept feasting while its edges already fell. The threshingfloor image closes the unit, it is time to thresh her, yet a little while, and the time of her harvest shall come, judgment described as a crop finally ripe.

Jeremiah 51:34-40

The voice that speaks here is read two ways by the bench, Zion herself personified describing her own violation, or the prophet lending the city his own words, and verse 35 settles it as Jerusalem's own complaint, my blood upon the inhabitants of Chaldea, shall Jerusalem say. The Lord answers as the go'el named two chapters earlier, I will plead thy cause, and take vengeance for thee, drying up her sea and her springs in direct reply to the violence done. Babylon's own feasts turn to her undoing, made drunken that they may sleep a perpetual sleep, and not wake, and the chapter's last image is lambs led to slaughter, the helplessness of the conquered handed to the conqueror in turn.

Jeremiah 51:41-44

Sheshach is Babel spelled through the Atbash cipher, the Hebrew alphabet reversed letter for letter, the same device the book already used at 25:26, a way of naming the great city without naming her directly. The sea come up upon Babylon pictures the flood of nations covering her the way water covers a drowned land, her cities left where no man dwells or passes by. Bel is punished a second time, made to disgorge what he had swallowed, the wall of Babylon itself named as the last thing to fall, the fortification ancient writers called one of the world's wonders brought down as the chapter's own proof.

Jeremiah 51:45-48

The exodus-shaped call to leave Babylon returns a third time in these two chapters, go ye out of the midst of her, deliver ye every man his soul, the same urgency 50:8 and 51:6 already gave. The exiles are warned against fainting at rumor after rumor of violence, one year and then another, ruler against ruler, a caution that matches how gradually the later Babylonian throne actually unraveled rather than falling in a single stroke. Heaven and earth are summoned to sing for Babylon's fall, creation itself made a witness the way it is elsewhere made a witness to judgment.

Jeremiah 51:49-53

The reciprocity of the whole oracle is stated in one line, as Babylon hath caused the slain of Israel to fall, so at Babylon shall fall the slain of all the earth, the same measure the chapter has been applying returned once more. The remnant is told to remember the Lord afar off and let Jerusalem come into their mind, exile piety kept alive by memory rather than presence, and the shame of strangers entering the Lord's sanctuaries is named as a wound still felt even as Babylon falls. Though she should mount up to heaven and fortify the height of her strength, spoilers shall still come, height offering no more protection than any other defense the chapter has already dismantled.

Jeremiah 51:54-58

The closing dirge gathers the chapter's sounds into one, a cry, a great destruction, waves roaring like great waters, the noise the opening verses only promised now finally heard. The broad walls of Babylon utterly broken and her high gates burned name the two defenses the city was famous for, ended together. Verse 58's own words, the people shall labour in vain, and the folk in the fire, and they shall be weary, are quoted almost verbatim at Habakkuk 2:13, verified at both ends, the same verdict pronounced twice in the prophets on empire-building that outlasts no one who raised it.

Jeremiah 51:59-61

The last of the book's sign-acts is given a named courier, Seraiah, brother to Baruch the scribe by the same father Neriah (32:12), a quiet prince who traveled with Zedekiah to Babylon, a trip the text records though Kings does not. Jeremiah writes in a book all the evil that should come upon Babylon, the sixty-three preceding verses bound into a single scroll and carried into the very city they condemn. The instruction that follows is precise, when thou comest to Babylon, and shalt see, and shalt read all these words, the prophecy meant to be spoken aloud on the ground it concerns.

Jeremiah 51:62-64

Seraiah's scripted prayer, thou hast spoken against this place, to cut it off, that none shall remain in it, turns the reading itself into an act of witness, the word confessed back to the Lord in the city it names. The sign-act completes by drowning: bind a stone to the book, and cast it into the midst of Euphrates, the same river the oracle has already named as Babylon's wealth and her vulnerability, the prophecy published by sinking the way the marred girdle and the shattered bottle published earlier words by ruin. Thus far are the words of Jeremiah closes the collection formally, marking what follows in chapter 52 as a later hand's appendix rather than the prophet's own continuing speech.
