John6chapter 6

John 6:1-4

the sea of Tiberias: John names the sea by its Roman title, Tiberias, alongside its older name Galilee, dating his own writing after Herod's city had made the newer name current. A great multitude followed him because they saw his miracles, drawn by the signs rather than yet by the message the signs point to, and Jesus withdraws to a mountain with his disciples as a teacher gathering a school. The passover, a feast of the Jews, was nigh, and the bench notes the timing places this multiplication a full year before the passion, the manna theme about to be argued against that same feast's own memory of Exodus bread.

John 6:5-7

Whence shall we buy bread is asked of Philip specifically, and John tells the reader plainly that Jesus already knew what he would do, the question set to prove him rather than to gather information. Philip does the arithmetic instead of trusting the asker, two hundred pennyworth of bread, roughly eight months' wages for a laborer, not sufficient for them, that every one may take a little. The bench reads Philip's answer as honest and reasonable by every human measure, which is exactly the point a miracle is about to overturn.

John 6:8-9

Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother: Andrew, introduced here as he was in chapter 1 bringing his own brother, now brings forward a lad's small provision, five barley loaves and two small fishes, barley being the poor man's grain rather than wheat. There is a lad here, which hath, but what are they among so many closes Andrew's own report with the same doubt Philip had voiced, the disciples united in seeing the need but not yet the answer. The bench notes the boy's willingness to give up his whole meal is the one act of faith recorded before the miracle, however small its scale beside the crowd.

John 6:10-13

Jesus orders the men to sit on the much grass in the place, a detail John alone records and one the commentators tie to the season, spring grass near a passover, before the summer heat burns the hillsides brown. He gave thanks over the loaves before distributing them, the pattern a household would use at any meal, and the bench hears the manna of Exodus 16 and Elisha's multiplied barley loaves in 2 Kings 4:42-44 both standing behind the scene without either exhausting it. Gather up the fragments, that nothing be lost yields twelve baskets, one for each disciple, a deliberate excess that answers Philip's arithmetic with abundance rather than mere sufficiency.

John 6:14-15

The men correctly identify the miracle's meaning even while misreading its purpose, that prophet that should come into the world naming the promise of Deuteronomy 18:15, a prophet like Moses. The reasoning that follows is instant and political, a prophet who can multiply bread as Moses' generation was fed can also be made a king, and they intend to take him by force. Jesus departs again into a mountain himself alone, refusing a crown offered on the crowd's own terms rather than the Father's, the true kingship he came to establish never built on bread alone.

John 6:16-18

The disciples go down to the sea and enter a ship without Jesus, evening having come and darkness with it, and the plain note that Jesus was not come to them measures how alone they felt on the water. The sea arose by reason of a great wind, the Sea of Galilee's own geography making such sudden storms common, cool air dropping from the surrounding hills onto the warm lake basin. The bench reads the disciples sent ahead by no explicit command of Jesus recorded here, though the parallel Gospels show he had constrained them to go, into precisely the trial he intended to meet them in.

John 6:19-21

Twenty-five or thirty furlongs is roughly three or four miles, most of the crossing done in a rising storm before they see Jesus walking on the sea and are afraid, a sight the parallel Gospels say they first took for a spirit. It is I; be not afraid renders the Greek ego eimi, the same words that will later carry the weight of the absolute I AM sayings, and while this instance is most simply his own self-identification in the dark, the bench notes the echo cannot be entirely accidental in a Gospel that will use the phrase so deliberately again. They willingly receive him into the ship, and immediately the ship was at the land, a second wonder folded quietly into the first.

John 6:22-24

The crowd left on the far shore works out by simple observation that Jesus could not have crossed with his disciples, since there had been no other boat there, and yet in the morning he is gone. Other boats from Tiberias give them a way across, and when the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, neither his disciples, they took shipping and came to Capernaum seeking for Jesus, a crowd still chasing the giver of bread rather than yet asking what he had meant by it. Their diligence in the search will only sharpen the rebuke waiting for them once they arrive.

John 6:25-27

Rabbi, when camest thou hither asks only about the crossing, and Jesus answers the motive beneath the question instead, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled, the signs consumed for their bread rather than read for their meaning. Labour not for the meat which perisheth reorders their priorities toward that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, a food the Son of man himself will give because him hath God the Father sealed, marked out and authenticated for this very office. The verb labour turns the crowd from spectators of yesterday's miracle to workers facing a demand they have not yet understood.

John 6:28-29

the works of God: What shall we do, that we might work the works of God takes labour in verse 27 as a summons to a program of religious effort, the plural works assuming a checklist to be performed. Jesus collapses the plural into a singular, this is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent, faith itself named the one work God requires rather than a ladder of deeds to be climbed. The bench notes the answer does not abolish good works but relocates their root, since believing on the one God sent is the work from which every other work that pleases God must grow.

John 6:30-31

What sign shewest thou then is a startling demand only a day after five thousand were fed, and the bench reads it as proof the crowd wants a sign on their own terms, something bigger or more sustained than yesterday's bread. Our fathers did eat manna in the desert, as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat, cites Psalm 78:24 and sets Moses' forty years of daily bread against Jesus' single afternoon, implying a greater and more prolonged provision would be needed to outdo their ancestor's Lawgiver. The demand hands Jesus the exact comparison the discourse now takes up and turns entirely on its head.

John 6:32-33

the true bread from heaven: Moses gave you not that bread from heaven corrects the crowd's own premise, since the manna was always God's gift through Moses rather than Moses' own achievement, but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven presses further still, a bread greater than manna now being offered in real time, giveth in the present tense against the manna's past. The bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world identifies the bread as a person rather than a substance, the shift from it to he arriving before the crowd has caught up with the change. Life for the world, not merely sustenance for a wilderness generation, states the scope manna itself was never large enough to carry.

John 6:34-35

Lord, evermore give us this bread answers Jesus much as the Samaritan woman answered him over the living water, asking for the gift while still missing the giver. I am the bread of life is the first of the Gospel's I AM sayings joined to a predicate, and the two clauses that follow, never hunger and never thirst, claim to satisfy the two deepest physical needs at the level of the soul, an appetite manna could feed for a day and this bread claims to feed forever. The bench reads the saying as deliberately final, not a bread among others but the bread itself, every other hunger measured against it.

John 6:36-37

Ye also have seen me, and believe not names the crowd's condition plainly, sight without faith, the miracle observed and the meaning refused. All that the Father giveth me shall come to me follows immediately, and the church has long read this pairing two ways, one tradition hearing an unconditional election that guarantees the coming of every one given, another hearing a description of the certainty of the gift's effect without settling the mechanics of how the giving and the human coming relate; both readings are held in the church and the verse itself asserts only the fact, not the theory beneath it. And him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out closes the verse with an assurance every tradition reads the same way, whoever actually comes finds no rejection waiting.

John 6:38-40

I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me repeats the pattern of chapter 5's obedient Son, the incarnation itself framed as an act of submission rather than independent initiative. The Father's will is stated twice for emphasis, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day, a preserving purpose covering the whole gift rather than each part left to chance. Every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him widens the promise from the corporate whole to each believer by name, the same everlasting life and the same last day resurrection held out to both.

John 6:41-42

The Jews then murmured, the same word the wilderness generation used against Moses over this very manna, a fitting echo for a crowd doubting a greater bread. Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know voices the offense every claim of heavenly origin runs into when the claimant's ordinary upbringing is common knowledge in the town. How is it then that he saith, I came down from heaven treats familiarity as disproof, the bench noting the irony that the very ordinariness of the incarnation, God hidden in a carpenter's household, is what their unbelief stumbles over.

John 6:43-44

Murmur not among yourselves answers complaint with a further hard saying rather than an easier one, no man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him. Draw translates helko, the same verb used elsewhere of hauling in a net or dragging a person, and the church reads the sovereignty of the drawing two ways, some holding it names an effectual grace given only to the elect, others a grace extended to all that must still be freely received, both traditions agreeing the drawing is real and that no one comes to Christ by unaided human effort alone. And I will raise him up at the last day repeats the promise of verse 40, the drawing and the raising bound together as one continuous work.

John 6:45-46

It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God cites Isaiah 54:13's promise of the new covenant, the whole people instructed directly rather than through priest and prophet alone, a keep-hard Old Testament citation this Gospel's own hand supplies. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me makes the hearing and the coming one continuous act, the Father's teaching landing precisely at faith in the Son rather than stopping short of him. Not that any man hath seen the Father guards against any claim to a private vision bypassing Christ, save he which is of God, he hath seen the Father, the Son alone possessing that sight and mediating it to all others.

John 6:47-48

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life restates the present possession of life on the strength of faith alone, the same claim carried since 5:24 now anchored to bread rather than voice. I am that bread of life repeats verse 35 nearly word for word, and the bench reads the repetition as deliberate emphasis before the discourse turns to its hardest section, the identical claim about to be pressed into language that will cost Jesus many of his followers. Nothing new is asserted here, but the ground is being laid one more time before the harder demand.

John 6:49-51

Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead states the manna's limit bluntly, a bread that fed the body but could not keep it from the grave. I am the living bread which came down from heaven claims what manna never could, that a man may eat thereof, and not die, life beyond the reach of physical death. The bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world turns the metaphor toward the cross for the first time in the discourse, the future tense will give pointing forward to a giving still to come, his own body offered up for a world's life.

John 6:52

give us his flesh to eat: The Jews therefore strove among themselves, the murmuring of verse 41 sharpening now into open dispute, over a question meant literally, How can this man give us his flesh to eat. The bench notes the crowd hears the words at the flattest possible level, cannibalism rather than any figure, and takes the plain sense as proof the claim is absurd rather than as an invitation to ask what else the words might mean. Their strife sets up the harder repetition Jesus is about to give rather than the retraction they plainly expect.

John 6:53

Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you meets their offense with a still harder form of the same saying rather than a softer one. The church has never read this single verse in only one way, some traditions hearing an institution of the Lord's Supper spoken here in advance and finding in it a real, sacramental participation in Christ, others hearing a vivid figure for the appropriation of Christ crucified by faith alone, no meal in view at all before the upper room. Both readings agree the verse demands more than admiration of Jesus, an actual feeding on him as the only source of life.

John 6:54-56

Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life ties the hard saying back to the same present-tense possession the whole chapter has argued, and I will raise him up at the last day keeps the promise of verses 39 and 44 attached to it once more. My flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed insists the food is not merely useful but real in the fullest sense, and dwelleth in me, and I in him introduces the abiding thread this Gospel will develop at length in chapter 15, mutual indwelling the goal toward which the hard saying has been driving all along. Whatever the precise mode intended, the language of intimacy outstrips mere agreement with a teaching.

John 6:57-58

As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father grounds the Son's own life in the Father's, the pattern of chapter 5 recalled once more, so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me extends the same relation of derived life to the believer. This is that bread which came down from heaven closes the discourse's central claim, not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead drawing the contrast one final time between a bread that only postponed death and a bread by which he that eateth shall live for ever. The whole argument that began with a demand for a sign greater than Moses ends by claiming a gift Moses' bread was never able to give.

John 6:59

John locates the whole discourse for his reader, these things said he in the synagogue, as he taught in Capernaum, the same town where the healing of the nobleman's son and the centurion's servant had already been done. The setting matters to the bench because it places the hard sayings on eating and drinking in the most public and most religiously formal space available, not a private aside but a synagogue address delivered where scribes and elders would be present. What follows next happens in that same room, among people who had every reason to know the Law's own horror of drinking blood.

John 6:60-61

Many therefore of his disciples names a wider circle than the twelve, followers who had stayed with him through Galilee up to this point, and their verdict is blunt, this is an hard saying, who can hear it. Jesus knew in himself that his disciples murmured, the same verb the crowd used earlier now applied to his own followers, and he does not soften the saying but asks instead whether it offends them, refusing to trade the truth for their comfort. The bench notes the honesty of the moment, a teacher who could have explained the hard saying away choosing instead to let it stand and watch who remains.

John 6:62-63

What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before offers a still harder thing to believe than eating his flesh, his return to a preexistent glory, meant to show that if this offends them the ascension will offend them further still, and yet the ascension is true regardless. It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing gives Jesus' own key to the hard saying, and the church has read the verse two ways, one tradition hearing a correction of any crudely physical or cannibalistic sense of verses 53 to 58, the other hearing a statement about the mode of reception, spirit and faith rather than unaided flesh, without withdrawing the reality of what is received. The words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life anchors the whole discourse back in his own speech as the true bread rather than in any theory about the mechanism.

John 6:64-65

But there are some of you that believe not exposes the real division beneath the hard saying, not confusion over words but unbelief underneath them, and John adds his own comment that Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him, a foreknowledge extending even to Judas at this early point in the ministry. Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father repeats verse 44's teaching on drawing grace, the discourse's hardest theological claim brought forward again as the explanation for the unbelief just named. The verse holds together a real human refusal and a divine sovereignty over who comes, without resolving how the two relate.

John 6:66-67

From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him marks the largest recorded desertion in the Gospels, a crowd that had followed for bread now unwilling to follow for a harder truth. Jesus does not chase after them or soften his words to win them back, and instead turns to the twelve with a question that leaves the door open rather than closed, Will ye also go away. The bench reads the moment as a hinge in the Gospel, popularity at its height in chapter 6's opening verses and thinned to twelve men by its close.

John 6:68-69

the words of eternal life: Simon Peter answers for the twelve with a question that has become the church's own confession in every age of hard teaching, Lord, to whom shall we go, staying not because every difficulty is resolved but because no other place offers what Jesus offers, thou hast the words of eternal life. Verse 69 adds the twelve's own certainty, thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God, John's version of the confession the other Gospels place at Caesarea Philippi, the bench reading it as either a separate earlier moment or the same event told from a different angle. Either way the twelve hold to the very claims that just emptied the wider crowd, the hard sayings on the bread of life becoming, for them, the reason to stay rather than the reason to leave.

John 6:70-71

one of you is a devil: Have not I chosen you twelve, and one of you is a devil answers Peter's confession with a warning the whole company could not have expected, faithful confession and coming betrayal held together in the same small circle. John supplies the name for his reader at once, he spake of Judas Iscariot the son of Simon, for he it was that should betray him, being one of the twelve, removing any suspense the other Gospels sometimes preserve longer. The bench notes the chapter that opened with bread multiplied for thousands closes with the darkest word in the Gospel so far, chosen and yet a devil, true faith and false discipleship seated at the very same table.
