Luke 8:1-3

And it came to pass afterward that he went throughout every city and village preaching the kingdom, and Luke names the traveling company differently than a reader expects, not only the twelve but certain women, healed of evil spirits and infirmities, who followed and ministered unto him of their substance. Mary called Magdalene, out of whom went seven devils, Joanna the wife of Chuza, Herod's own steward, and Susanna stand named where the other Gospels leave the company anonymous, a court wife's presence hinting the movement had reached further than Galilee's fishermen and farmers. The bench reads their giving as the itinerant ministry's actual support, women funding the kingdom's advance with their own goods, a detail Luke alone preserves and the women thread of this Gospel returns to at the cross and the tomb.

Luke 8:4-8

When much people were gathered out of every city, he spake by a parable, a sower going out to sow, seed falling by the wayside to be trodden down and devoured, on rock to spring up and wither for lack of moisture, among thorns to be choked, and on good ground to bear fruit an hundredfold. The image is drawn from ordinary Galilean farming, seed scattered before the plowing rather than after, so the four soils are not four fields but four conditions any single field might hold. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear closes the telling as a summons rather than a moral, marking the parable as a riddle meant to divide its hearers rather than merely illustrate a truth.

Luke 8:9-10

His disciples asked him, What might this parable be, and the answer distinguishes two audiences at a stroke: unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God, but to others in parables, that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand. The bench reads the borrowed language of Isaiah's own commission as judicial rather than arbitrary, parables concealing further truth from those who have already refused the plain word while opening it to those who have received it. The same method of teaching therefore sifts its hearers, a gift to the disciples and a veil to the crowd whose murmuring unbelief has already answered itself.

Luke 8:11-15

The seed is the word of God: Now the parable is this, Jesus says, turning riddle into explanation: the seed is the word of God, and the four soils become four responses a hearer can make to it. The wayside hearer loses the word to the devil before it roots at all, the rock hearer receives it with joy but has no root and falls away in time of temptation, and the thorny ground hearer is choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of this life and brings no fruit to perfection. Only the good ground, an honest and good heart, keeps the word and brings forth fruit with patience, the last clause its own quiet correction to any hearer expecting an instant harvest.

Luke 8:16-18

No man, when he hath lighted a candle, covereth it with a vessel, Jesus continues, turning from the sower to the hearer's own responsibility once the word is received, for nothing is secret that shall not be made manifest, nor hid that shall not come abroad. Take heed therefore how ye hear closes the whole discourse begun at the parable, hearing itself named as the decisive act rather than a passive reception of sound. Whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he seemeth to have, the bench reading this as the same spiritual law already pictured in the four soils, that truth received and used grows, while truth merely heard and set aside decays even from its hearer's grasp.

Luke 8:19-21

Then came to him his mother and his brethren, and could not come at him for the press, a scene Luke ties directly to the teaching just finished, for when he is told they stand without desiring to see him, his answer redefines the family that matters: My mother and my brethren are these which hear the word of God, and do it. The bench is careful to read this as no slight against Mary, who stands at the cross and waits in the upper room later in the story, but as the same lesson the parable just taught applied now to blood itself, hearing and doing outrank even the nearest natural tie. The good ground of the parable and the true family of this saying are the same people under two figures.

Luke 8:22-25

Let us go over unto the other side of the lake, he says, and while they sail he falls asleep, an ordinary human weariness the storm which follows will interrupt but never accuse. The disciples wake him with the fisherman's own fear, Master, master, we perish, and he rebukes the wind and the raging water with a word, and there was a calm, an authority the created order itself obeys. Where is your faith, he asks before the miracle rather than after, and the crowd's old wonder at his teaching now becomes the disciples' own, What manner of man is this, for he commandeth even the winds and water, and they obey him.

Luke 8:26-29

They arrived at the country of the Gadarenes, over against Galilee and on Gentile ground, and there met him out of the city a certain man which had devils long time, ware no clothes, abode in no house, but among the tombs, a portrait of degradation as complete as the Gospels give. He had been bound with chains and fetters and had broken them, driven of the devil into the wilderness, and at the sight of Jesus he falls down crying with a loud voice, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God most high, the demons' own testimony naming him rightly before any human confession in the chapter does. The bench notes the parenthesis of verse 29 explaining a history already ended by the time the man meets Jesus, Luke's habit of filling in a scene's background after he has already begun it.

Luke 8:30-33

What is thy name, Jesus asks, and the answer is Legion, because many devils were entered into him, a term borrowed from Rome's own military unit and carrying its full weight of numberless, disciplined hostility. The devils beg not to be commanded into the deep, the abyss reserved for their final confinement, and ask instead to enter the herd of swine feeding on the mountain, unclean animals in Gentile territory, and he suffers them, and the herd runs violently down a steep place into the lake and is choked. The bench reads the destruction of the swine as neither cruelty to their Gentile owners nor a mark against the miracle, but as visible proof that the devils truly left the man, their violence spent on beasts rather than concealed as a claimed but unverifiable cure.

Luke 8:34-37

When they that fed the swine saw what was done, they fled and told it in the city and country, and the whole multitude of the Gadarenes comes out, not to thank him, but to besought him to depart from them, for they were taken with great fear. The bench weighs the strangeness honestly, a legion of devils cast out and a madman restored to his right mind, yet the district prefers its swine and its old order to the Lord who disturbed both, and Jesus grants the request, going up into the ship without argument. The scene stands as a warning the Gospel does not soften, that deliverance can be witnessed firsthand and still refused when the cost of receiving it looks too high.

Luke 8:38-39

The man out of whom the devils departed besought him that he might be with him, the natural wish of one just delivered to stay near his deliverer, and Jesus sends him away instead with a different commission, Return to thine own house, and shew how great things God hath done unto thee. Where Jesus elsewhere charges the healed to silence, here in Gentile country he charges the opposite, and the man published throughout the whole city how great things Jesus had done unto him. The bench reads the difference as fitted to the field, a witness left standing in territory Jesus himself is about to leave, preparing ground the apostles will enter again in Acts.

Luke 8:40-42

When Jesus returned, the people gladly received him, for they were all waiting for him, and there came a man named Jairus, a ruler of the synagogue, who falls at his feet and besought him to come into his house, for he had one only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she lay a dying. A ruler of the synagogue seeking out Jesus openly, at a moment when the religious establishment elsewhere resists him, is itself notable, and the bench reads a father's desperation overriding any caution about his office. As he went the people thronged him, the crowd's own pressure that produces the interrupting scene of the next verses.

Luke 8:43-48

A woman having an issue of blood twelve years, who had spent all her living upon physicians and could be healed of none, comes behind him in the crowd and touches the border of his garment, and immediately her issue of blood stanched. Jesus asks, Who touched me, and when Peter protests that the multitude throngs him on every side, he holds to the question, for I perceive that virtue is gone out of me, a healing that cost him something even without his choosing its recipient. She comes trembling and declares the whole truth before all the people, and he answers her publicly rather than letting the healing pass unremarked, Daughter, be of good comfort, thy faith hath made thee whole, go in peace, naming her faith rather than her touch as the true instrument, the same word this Gospel already gave the sinful woman of the previous chapter.

Luke 8:49-50

While he yet spake, one comes from the ruler's house saying, Thy daughter is dead, trouble not the Master, the delay's cost now apparent, an interruption that looks fatal. Jesus answers before Jairus can, Fear not, believe only, and she shall be made whole, meeting the report of death with an instruction rather than a denial of the fact. The bench reads the woman just healed as the case in point standing beside Jairus as the word is spoken, a faith just vindicated addressed now to a harder trial.

Luke 8:51-56

When he came into the house he suffered no man to go in, save Peter and James and John and the parents, a private circle Luke will keep also for the transfiguration. All wept and bewailed her, but he said, Weep not, she is not dead, but sleepeth, and the mourners who know her dead laugh him to scorn, an unwitting witness against any later claim that she had merely fainted. He put them all out, took her by the hand and called, Maid, arise, and her spirit came again and she arose straightway, and he commanded to give her meat, the same practical tenderness that once named a widow's need at Nain. Her parents were astonished, and he charged them to tell no man, the silence fitting here as it was not at Gadara, since a raised child in Jewish Galilee is a claim that would travel far faster than his hour requires.
