5 notes on this verseAll the heretics have gone astray by not understanding the mystery of his nativity. The statement "He who opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord" is more applicable to the special nativity of the Savior than to that of all humanity. For Christ alone opened the closed doors of the womb of virginity, which nevertheless remained permanently closed. This is the closed east door, through which only the high priest enters and leaves, and nevertheless it is always closed.

The claim on the firstborn goes back to the night in Egypt, where Exodus 13:2 said sanctify unto me all the firstborn and used the word sanctify for the first time in Scripture. The ass is redeemed with a lamb or else its neck is broken, so an unclean animal lives because a clean one dies in its place, and the same verse says all the firstborn of thy sons thou shalt redeem. Israel's sons are kept on the terms the passover set.

All that openeth the matrix is mine,.... Or "the womb", and therefore to be sanctified, and set apart for his use: this also was declared, and the law concerning it given, at the time of their coming out of Egypt, and here repeated; see Gill on Exo 13:2, Exo 13:12.
This feast was instituted, ch. xii. 13 , and urged again, ch. xxiii. The feast of weeks, that is, that of pentecost, seven weeks after the passover; and to this is annexed the law of the first-fruits.
