Mark 1:1

The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God: Mark states his thesis before any narrative begins: the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the title the whole book is built to earn. Three times the floor lets the Son-of-God confession surface, from unclean spirits at 3:11, from the Father's own voice at 9:7, and at last from a Gentile executioner at 15:39, so that a reader travels the same road as the first hearers. Bede's Exposition of Mark reads the shortest Gospel as the fullest confession, and the bench notes the pace begins here: no genealogy, no infancy, straight to the claim.

Mark 1:2-3

The citation blends two prophets, Malachi 3:1's messenger and Isaiah 40:3's voice in the wilderness, and the KJV floor attributes both to the prophets while older manuscripts read in Isaiah the prophet, a textual question stated honestly rather than smoothed over. Isaiah's voice crying in the wilderness, prepare ye the way of the Lord, opens the way thread this Gospel will run through the central section, John himself the preparer rather than the way itself. The bench reads the composite quotation as Mark's own method in miniature, Scripture piled on Scripture to frame the story before a single event has happened.

Mark 1:4-6

John did baptize in the wilderness, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins, a call that draws all the land of Judea and Jerusalem out to the Jordan to confess their sins publicly. His clothing, camel's hair and a leather girdle, deliberately echoes 2 Kings 1:8's description of Elijah, and Mark lets the costume speak the identity Malachi 4:5 had promised before Jesus ever names John an Elijah figure himself. Locusts and wild honey are the wilderness diet of a man living on what the land itself provides, austerity matching the message of repentance he preaches.

Mark 1:7-8

John names his own successor mightier than I, and states his unworthiness in a servant's specific task, to stoop down and unloose the latchet of his shoes, a menial job even a Jewish slave could not be required to perform for his master under some rabbinic rulings. The contrast John draws is between his own baptism with water and the one to come who shall baptize with the Holy Ghost, an act only God himself was expected to perform in the prophets, Joel 2:28 and Ezekiel 36:25-27 among them. The bench reads John's self-lowering here as the truest measure of the greatness he is announcing.

Mark 1:9

Jesus travels the roughly seventy miles from Nazareth to the Jordan for a baptism he did not need, and Mark simply states the fact plainly, that he came and was baptized, without the hesitation Matthew records from John himself. The bench reads the King's presence in a common man's queue at the river as itself the first mark of the servant shape the whole Gospel will trace. Calvin's Harmony on the passage reads the baptism as consecration rather than cleansing, the Son taking his place at the head of Israel's true repentance.

Mark 1:10-11

The heavens are literally torn, the same verb Mark uses only once more, for the temple veil torn at the crucifixion, so that the book's two openings of access frame the whole Gospel between them. The Spirit descends like a dove and the Father's voice names the Son beloved and well pleasing, echoing Psalm 2:7's coronation and Isaiah 42:1's servant, Father, Spirit, and Son together at the very outset. Straightway carries the pace Mark will use forty times across the book, and the exposition names the device here, once, without repeating it at every later instance.

Mark 1:12-13

The same Spirit that just descended at the Jordan now drives Jesus into the wilderness, a stronger verb than Matthew or Luke's led, and Mark alone notes he was with the wild beasts, an eyewitness detail of a danger remembered as real. Satan's temptation is stated in one line where Matthew gives three exchanges, but the angels who minister to him answer Psalm 91's promise and cast the scene as the second Adam succeeding in the wilderness where the first failed in a garden. The bench reads the compression as Mark's method throughout, the fact stated and the weight left for the reader to feel.

Mark 1:14-15

John's imprisonment marks the transfer, one voice silenced and a greater one begins, and Jesus preaches the same gospel word Mark opened the book with at 1:1. The time is fulfilled announces that the centuries of expectation have run their course, and the kingdom of God is at hand joins two commands, repent and believe, faith answering the announcement rather than earning it. The bench reads this as Mark's own summary of the whole ministry compressed into two verses, the thesis of 1:1 now preached aloud in Galilee.

Mark 1:16-18

Jesus calls working fishermen mid-cast, not idle men found waiting, and the call itself supplies the new trade, fishers of men built directly from the old one they already knew. Straightway they forsook their nets is the immediate obedience Mark's pace word demands of disciples exactly as it demands it of demons and diseases, and the bench reads the abandoned nets as the cost stated without commentary, since Mark rarely explains what he shows. Peter's own memory, on the usual reckoning behind this Gospel, likely supplies the plain fact that a boat and a family's business were left running.

Mark 1:19-20

James and John are found mending nets, ordinary maintenance work, and the call costs them more visibly than Simon and Andrew, since they leave their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants. The detail of hired servants tells the bench this was a family business substantial enough to employ help, so the sacrifice is measured, not poverty walking away from nothing. Jesus later surnames these two Boanerges, sons of thunder, at 3:17, and the exposition marks the seed of that name being planted here in the boat they left.

Mark 1:21-22

Capernaum becomes the base of the Galilean ministry, and Jesus does what any rabbi might do, entering the synagogue on the sabbath to teach, yet the response breaks the pattern, they were astonished at his doctrine. The comparison Mark draws is exact, as one that had authority, and not as the scribes, the scribes' teaching leaning on chains of citation from earlier authorities while his carried its own weight. The bench reads this astonishment as the first instance of Mark's amazement thread, the crowds and even the disciples repeatedly stunned across the book by an authority they cannot categorize.

Mark 1:23-26

The unclean spirit names Jesus precisely, Jesus of Nazareth and the Holy One of God, correct theology from a source Mark never lets testify unchallenged, and Jesus silences it at once, hold thy peace. The rebuke word used here is the same used later for the storm at 4:39, binding this exorcism to the sea-calming as two displays of the identical authority over chaos. The demon's exit is violent, torn and crying with a loud voice, and the bench reads the silencing command as the first instance of the messianic secret, a pattern recurring at 1:34, 1:44, and 3:12, holding the confession true while controlling when and how it is announced.

Mark 1:27-28

The crowd's question, what thing is this, what new doctrine is this, is Mark's amazement family in its second appearance in as many verses, a pattern that will surface eighteen times across the book. Authority is now proven over spirits as well as words, the same power claimed for teaching in verse 22 now shown obeyed by unclean spirits, and the report runs immediately throughout the region, fame moving at the same straightway pace as everything else in this chapter. The bench notes Mark gives no interior response from Jesus to the acclaim, only the plain fact of it spreading, the humility of the narrative matching the humility of its subject.

Mark 1:29-31

The four newly called disciples bring Jesus straight from public teaching into a private home, and Simon's mother in law lies sick of a fever, a detail that quietly confirms Peter was a married man, a fact Paul later assumes at 1 Corinthians 9:5. Jesus takes her by the hand and lifts her up, a physical gesture Mark records at several healings, and the fever leaves her immediately and completely, proven by her own strength returning to serve them at once. The bench reads and she ministered unto them as the healing's own verification, a woman raised from a fever well enough that same hour to wait on guests.

Mark 1:32-34

The crowd waits for sunset because the sabbath legally ends then, and all the city gathered at the door is Mark's characteristic scale, the whole town converging on one house in one evening. He healed many and cast out many devils, the numbers left unspecified but the scope plain, and suffered not the devils to speak, because they knew him repeats the messianic secret from verse 25, the demons' correct testimony refused a public platform. The bench reads the refusal as consistent policy rather than inconsistency, since a confession from an unclean source, however true its content, was never the way Jesus chose to be known.

Mark 1:35-37

After a night of ministry that likely ran past midnight, Jesus rises again before dawn to pray alone, Mark's only note in this chapter of his private devotional life, and the location, a solitary place, is deliberately sought out from a house the whole city had just filled. Simon and his companions follow after him, and their report, all men seek for thee, carries the pressure of a ministry succeeding faster than its founder intended it to. The bench reads the prayer itself as the quiet center the chapter's noise surrounds, the pattern of withdrawal Jesus keeps even as demand for him only grows.

Mark 1:38-39

Jesus answers the crowd's pull toward Capernaum with a deliberate refusal to stay, for therefore came I forth stating his own purpose plainly against the pressure to settle into one popular location. Preaching, not merely healing, is named as the reason he came, and verse 39 shows the itinerary carried out, throughout all Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and casting out devils as he goes. The bench notes the healings never stop, but they are named second, the proclaimed word holding first place in his own stated priority.

Mark 1:40-42

A leper approaches at all, breaking the isolation the law required of him, and his plea assumes Jesus's power outright, if thou wilt, thou canst, leaving only the will in question, not the ability. Jesus, moved with compassion, touches him, an act that under the law would itself transmit uncleanness to the healthy, yet here the current runs the other way and the leprosy departs instead. The bench reads the touch as the whole gospel in miniature, the clean one reaching toward the unclean rather than recoiling from him, and the cure following immediately, as soon as he had spoken.

Mark 1:43-45

Jesus charges the healed man strictly and sends him first to the priest, in obedience to Leviticus 14's law, a testimony unto them that a Messiah keeps the law even while working above it. The command to say nothing to any man is the messianic secret's fourth instance in one chapter, and the man's disobedience, publishing it much and blazing it abroad, produces the exact crowd pressure Jesus withdrew to Galilee's smaller towns to avoid. The bench closes the chapter on the paradox that will run through the whole book, a fame Jesus keeps trying to slow only accelerates every time someone he heals cannot keep quiet.
