3 notes on this verseIt is not made worse than really it was, but is shown to be exceedingly sinful. It was an evil congregation, each bad, but altogether in congregation, very bad. They tempted God--tempted his power, whether he could help them in their straits--his goodness, whether he would--and his faithfulness, whether his promise would be performed.

The book keeps its own tally and gives the number here. Ten times covers the sea, Marah, the wilderness of Sin, Rephidim, the calf, Taberah, Kibroth-hattaavah and this, and the older commentators list them in slightly different ways. What the sentence turns on is stated in the same verse, that these are men who saw the miracles and have not hearkened to my voice.
