5 notes on this verseThe angel of God spake unto me in a dream - It is strange that we had not heard of this dream before; and yet it seems to have taken place before the cattle brought forth, immediately after the bargain between him and Laban.

I saw in a dream
on Genesis 31:10-12
Chapter 30 told this from the outside, with peeled branches in the troughs and no word from God. Here a dream shows him the flock already marked. The angel of God spoke to him in it and named what Laban had done to him. Calvin reads the increase as God's work and the branches as Jacob's own device.

Here I am is hinneni, the answer Abraham gave when God called him at Genesis 22:1 and 11. Jacob answers the same way at 46:2, when God speaks to him at night on the road to Egypt. The caller names Himself the God of Bethel in verse 13.
