Isaiah 1:1

The vision of Isaiah the son of Amoz: The four kings named here, Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah, place the entire book across roughly half a century of the Assyrian crisis, and the traditional view holds one prophet writing through all of it. The New Testament itself treats both halves of the coming book as one Esaias, John 12:38-40 quoting both 53:1 and 6:10 in one breath, the canon's own datum on the authorship question. Two-author and three-author positions are held by later critical scholars on grounds of style and historical reference, and the traditional single authorship leads the older bench.

Isaiah 1:2-3

Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth: Heaven and earth are summoned as witnesses the way a covenant lawsuit calls its witnesses, the form Moses used at Deuteronomy 32:1 to open the Song of Moses. The charge that follows is a father's complaint, I have nourished and brought up children, and they have rebelled against me. Even the ox knows the hand that feeds it and the ass its master's crib, and Israel, with far greater knowledge, does not know or consider at all.

Isaiah 1:4-6

Ah sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity: Ah sinful nation stacks four indictments in one breath, a people laden with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, children that are corrupters, before naming the title that will run through the whole book: they have provoked the Holy One of Israel unto anger. This is the title's first appearance, and the brief's count against the whole of Scripture shows it falling twenty five times in Isaiah of the thirty one times it is used anywhere in the Bible. The sickness that follows, from the sole of the foot even unto the head, wounds and bruises left unclosed and unbound, pictures the nation's condition rather than any one man's, a diagnosis the ritual of the following verses cannot heal.

Isaiah 1:7-9

Your country is desolate, your cities are burned with fire: The desolation is not future but present, your country is desolate, your cities are burned with fire, strangers devouring the land while its own people stand and watch, language the older commentators tie to the Assyrian invasions of Isaiah's own lifetime. Zion left standing amid this ruin is pictured as a cottage in a vineyard, a lodge in a garden of cucumbers, the last flimsy shelter after the harvest is gone, a besieged city with nothing left but the siege. Except the Lord of hosts had left a remnant, Judah's fate would already match Sodom and Gomorrah, and that remnant, spared rather than earned, sets up the direct address to Sodom's rulers that opens the next verse.

Isaiah 1:10-12

Hear the word of the Lord, ye rulers of Sodom: Sodom and Gomorrah, invoked as comparison in verse nine, becomes direct address in verse ten, hear the word of the Lord, ye rulers of Sodom, a name for Jerusalem's own leaders that no listener could hear as flattery. The question who hath required this at your hand, to tread my courts turns from indictment to interrogation, exposing worship offered without ever being asked for. What looks like devotion, a full round of sacrifice and temple attendance, is named a burden God never laid down.

Isaiah 1:13-15

Bring no more vain oblations: Bring no more vain oblations opens a catalogue of rejected worship, incense called an abomination, new moons and sabbaths and solemn assemblies called iniquity, feasts God says his own soul hates and is weary to bear. The catalogue does not condemn the forms themselves, which the Lord had commanded through Moses, but the worship offered alongside injustice, and verse fifteen names the reason outright, your hands are full of blood. Prayers multiplied by hands stained with wrong are prayers God says he will not hear, and the eyes hidden are his own, turned from a people he refuses to watch pray.

Isaiah 1:16-17

Wash you, make you clean: Wash you, make you clean answers the vain oblations with the one washing the ritual could never supply, an inward turning stated as seven short commands in a row. Cease to do evil and learn to do well frame the whole list, and the four that follow give it content aimed at real people, seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow. The fatherless and the widow name the two classes with no advocate of their own, and their care becomes the test the sacrifices of verses eleven through fifteen had failed.

Isaiah 1:18-20

Come now, and let us reason together: Come now, and let us reason together turns the courtroom scene toward an offer no earlier verse has made, the Lord inviting the very people he has just indicted to argue the case with him. Scarlet and crimson, both fixed dyes the ancient world knew could not be washed out, are set against snow and wool, a stain the law of nature cannot remove promised removal anyway. Verses nineteen and twenty then set the offer beside its opposite in a single conditional, willing and obedient eats the good of the land, refusal and rebellion meets the sword, for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it.

Isaiah 1:21-23

How is the faithful city become an harlot: How is the faithful city become an harlot opens in the meter of a funeral lament, the same rhythm used to mourn the dead, sung here over a city still standing. What was once full of judgment, righteousness lodging in it, is measured against what it has become in three trade images, silver turned to dross, wine cut with water, and princes who keep company with thieves. The corruption named in verse twenty three is specifically judicial, gifts and rewards bought and sold while the fatherless and the widow, named just verses earlier as the test of true religion, cannot get a hearing at all.

Isaiah 1:24-26

Therefore saith the Lord, the Lord of hosts, the mighty One of Israel: Therefore saith the Lord, the Lord of hosts, the mighty One of Israel stacks divine titles the way verse four stacked indictments, and what follows is announced as relief from adversaries rather than mere anger. The purging is smelting language, the Lord promising to purely purge away thy dross and take away all thy tin, the refiner's fire the prophets return to again when a nation's corruption runs to its very metal. Verse twenty six answers verse twenty one directly, the judges restored as at the first bring back the title lost, thou shalt be called the city of righteousness, the faithful city.

Isaiah 1:27-31

Zion shall be redeemed with judgment: Zion shall be redeemed with judgment pairs two words the chapter has kept apart until now, judgment as the very means of the redemption rather than its opposite, her converts turning back by way of the same righteousness that condemned them. The oaks and gardens named in verse twenty nine point at the groves used in Canaanite worship, planted for the shade and for the god believed to live in it, and the shame promised is the shame of trusting a tree that itself is dying, a leaf fading, a garden without water. The chapter's last image turns the guilty into their own fuel, the strong as tow and the maker of it as a spark, both burning together with nothing to quench them, judgment that needs no outside fire because the sin has already supplied it.
