Chapter summary

Jehovah of hosts strips Jerusalem and Judah of every stay and staff — bread and water, the mighty man, judge, prophet, elder, and counselor — and gives children as their princes. Society collapses into mutual oppression; a man seizes his brother to make him ruler because he owns a cloak, and the brother refuses. Jerusalem is ruined because tongue and deeds are set against Jehovah; the people declare their sin like Sodom. Jehovah enters into judgment with the elders and princes who have eaten up the vineyard and ground the face of the poor. The chapter then turns to the haughty daughters of Zion, cataloguing the finery to be taken away — anklets, crescents, nose-jewels, hand-mirrors — replaced by rottenness, rope, baldness, and sackcloth, while the men fall by the sword and the city sits desolate on the ground.
