Chapter summary

Paul's heart's grief for his kinsmen according to the flesh, for whom he could wish himself accursed. Not all Israel are of Israel; the promise flows through election. Potter and clay; vessels of mercy and of wrath. Gentiles have attained; Israel has stumbled at the stone appointed. JFB reads the chapter theologically, tracing sovereign mercy without demeaning Israel's privileges. The chapter names a mystery without collapsing it — God's purposive election without injustice to any.

Drafted from Matthew Henry, Calvin, Gill, Clarke, JFB, and Barnes.
