1 Samuel 14:1-2

Jonathan moves on his own initiative and keeps his father in the dark, while Saul sits at the edge of Gibeah under a pomegranate tree with six hundred men who do nothing. The chapter opens on that contrast and holds it: one Saulide acts in faith and one commands a camp that waits. Six hundred men are the whole muster left to Israel after 13:15, a number the narrator does not explain but the reader is meant to feel.

1 Samuel 14:3

The priest at Saul's camp is traced four generations back to Eli and named as the brother of Ichabod, the child whose name meant the glory is departed at 4:21. The line has survived the ark's capture and Shiloh's fall, and it still wears the ephod that carries the LORD's answers, which is the very thing Saul asks for two verses later. Naming Ichabod's brother here quietly ties this camp back to the ruin of chapter four before Saul has done anything at all.

1 Samuel 14:4-5

The narrator stops to name the two crags, Bozez and Seneh, and to set them one over against Michmash and the other over against Gibeah. The detail is not ornament: it says the pass Jonathan proposes to climb is a real place with a real difficulty, so that his plan reads as reckless by any military measure. Visitors to the site still describe the steep faces the two young men had to climb on hands and feet.

1 Samuel 14:6-7

Jonathan states Gideon's arithmetic in one sentence: the LORD is not limited by the size of the force that carries his name into battle. He calls the enemy uncircumcised, the same word Israel's own champion will use of Goliath in chapter 17, and he goes forward on a maybe, it may be that the LORD will work for us, which is confidence without presumption. His armourbearer answers with a loyalty the text records but never explains, turn thee, behold, I am with thee according to thy heart.

1 Samuel 14:8-10

Jonathan sets a sign to test whether the LORD has delivered the garrison into his hand, and the terms are his own: if the Philistines say come up, that is the word to go. This is not the priest's ephod or a cast lot but a private test of providence, agreed between two men before they climb. Saul will ask for a formal sign in the same chapter, at verse 37, and receive silence, while Jonathan's informal one is answered before he finishes climbing.

1 Samuel 14:11-14

The garrison's own taunt, the Hebrews come forth out of the holes where they had hid themselves, becomes the invitation that undoes them, for Jonathan climbs up on hands and feet with his armourbearer behind him. The first slaughter is counted precisely, about twenty men within half an acre of land, ground a yoke of oxen might plow in a morning. Two men do this with no army behind them and no order from the king, and the smallness of the space makes the victory harder to explain by numbers.

1 Samuel 14:15-16

The panic spreads from the garrison to the spoilers to the whole host, and the narrator adds that the earth quaked, language that lifts a skirmish of two men into something the text calls an act of God rather than a rout achieved by arms. Saul's watchmen at Gibeah see the multitude melting away before anyone in the camp knows why. The trembling answers Jonathan's maybe of verse six with an outcome no strategy of Saul's had produced in forty days at Elah or in this whole campaign.

1 Samuel 14:17-19

Saul counts his own camp before he moves, finds Jonathan and his armourbearer missing, and calls for the ark so the priest can ask the LORD what to do. Then, with the noise in the Philistine camp growing while he waits, Saul cuts the process short himself: Withdraw thine hand. It is the chapter's first sign of a pattern that runs through both books, a king who calls for enquiry and does not wait to finish it, and it sits one verse before Saul's own formal enquiry at 37 gets no answer at all.

1 Samuel 14:20-23

The rout turns the Philistine camp against itself before Saul's men strike a blow, and Hebrews who had gone over to the Philistine side and Israelites hiding in the hills both come out to join the winning side once the outcome is plain. The narrator names the true cause without qualifying it: so the LORD saved Israel that day. The battle rolls past Michmash to Beth-aven, a place name that will carry its own irony after Saul's next decision.

1 Samuel 14:24-26

Saul turns a day the LORD had already won into a test of his own devising, an oath sworn for his own vindication, that I may be avenged on mine enemies, laid on men already faint from fighting. The people keep it even in a wood dripping with honey, no man put his hand to his mouth, because they fear the oath more than they trust their own hunger. The vow costs nothing yet and will cost everything by the chapter's end.

1 Samuel 14:27

Jonathan never heard the oath, so he dips the end of his rod in the honeycomb and eats without a second thought. His eyes were enlightened is the narrator's own verdict on the act, strength returning to a man who kept fighting on empty while the rest of the army starved under his father's word. The irony sits in plain sight: the son who won the battle by faith is the one his father's vow condemns.

1 Samuel 14:28-30

A soldier tells Jonathan what his father swore, and Jonathan answers plainly, my father hath troubled the land, pointing to his own renewed strength as evidence the oath did harm rather than good. His closing question widens the charge: a fuller feeding of the army on the spoil already at hand would have meant a much greater slaughter among the Philistines. Jonathan does not know yet that the words will nearly cost him his life.

1 Samuel 14:31-32

The pursuit runs a long road, and the moment the fast is lifted at evening the starved army flies on the plunder without waiting to slaughter the animals properly, eating them with the blood still in the meat. The very oath meant to secure a complete victory produces, at its lifting, a different sin against the law. Barnes reads the two failures, the rash vow and the eating with blood, as one chain: a king's private zeal creating a public transgression he then has to police.

1 Samuel 14:33-35

Saul acts fast once he is told, rolling a great stone as a slaughtering block so the animals can be killed and drained properly rather than eaten where they fall. The chapter then adds a detail worth its own weight: this was the first altar Saul built to the LORD, in the same chapter that holds his rash oath and his cut-short enquiry. Zeal for the letter of the law and carelessness with the LORD's word sit side by side in the same king on the same day.

1 Samuel 14:36-37

let us go down after the Philistines by night: Saul proposes to press the victory through the night, and the priest for once counsels enquiry first, let us draw near hither unto God. The answer is silence: But he answered him not that day. This is the earliest recorded case in Scripture of the LORD declining to answer Saul, the same pattern that will end at Endor in chapter 28, where Saul enquires and again gets nothing until he turns to the witch.

1 Samuel 14:38-39

Saul treats the silence as proof that someone has sinned and calls the chiefs of the people forward to find out who. His oath widens without his knowing its target, though it be in Jonathan my son, he shall surely die, sworn over a son he does not yet suspect. No man among the people answers him, which the text leaves as an ominous quiet before the lot is cast.

1 Samuel 14:40-42

Saul narrows the field twice by lot, the people against himself and Jonathan, then himself against Jonathan, asking God for a lot with no ambiguity in it. The lot is the formal, priestly channel Saul trusts, set against Jonathan's simple private test at the pass eight days earlier: one king waits on a mechanism, one son moved on a maybe. Jonathan is taken, and the reader who has followed the chapter already knows why the LORD did not answer at verse 37.

1 Samuel 14:43-45

Jonathan confesses the whole of his offense in one clause, a little honey with the end of a rod, and Saul answers with a second oath as rash as the first, thou shalt surely die, Jonathan. It is the people, not the priest and not the king, who stop the sentence: shall Jonathan die, who hath wrought this great salvation in Israel, and they swear that not one hair of his head shall fall. Saul's own army overrules Saul's own vow to save the man who won the day, and the text lets that stand without comment on either oath.

1 Samuel 14:46-47

The pursuit ends here, the victory left unfinished the way Jonathan warned it might be at verse 30, and the narrative widens from one battle to a summary of Saul's whole reign. Fighting on every side against Moab, Ammon, Edom, Zobah and the Philistines describes a king who is never at rest, and wherever he turned himself, he vexed them credits real, if flawed, kingship. The summary block that follows treats this as the shape of Saul's entire reign rather than one more campaign.

1 Samuel 14:48

Saul's first recorded engagement with Amalek in Samuel is a single clause, delivering Israel from raiders who had been spoiling them, with no hint yet of Exodus 17's standing sentence against that nation. Chapter 15 will return to Amalek at length and make the ban explicit and total, so this verse is the quiet opening beat of a war the text later says was never finished. Barnes reads it as an early success that leaves Saul unprepared for the harder test to come.

1 Samuel 14:49-51

The family list names Merab and Michal, daughters whose fates the story has not yet reached: Merab is promised to Goliath's slayer at 17:25 and given to another man at 18:19, and Michal becomes David's wife and loses him to Saul's jealousy. Abner the captain of the host is here identified as the son of Ner, Saul's own uncle, which makes Abner the king's cousin and explains the loyalty that carries Saul's house into the war that follows his death. The list is plain record, but every name in it reappears later in the book.

1 Samuel 14:52

The chapter closes on a standing condition rather than an ending: the Philistine war never stops for the rest of Saul's reign, and the king makes a practice of taking every strong or valiant man he sees into his own service. That practice is the very door David walks through at 16:21 and again at 18:2, when Saul takes him for the same reason this verse names. A verse of summary becomes the hinge that opens the next stage of the book.
