The whole was designed as a symbolical act, to show the people that there would be a return from Babylon, that each family should re-enter on its former possessions, and that a man might safely purchase on the certainty of this event.

Hanamel's visit is foretold. When the cousin asks Jeremiah to use “the right of redemption” on a field, he knows “that this was the word of the LORD.” The sale is ordinary, “seventeen shekels of silver” for land he is unlikely to farm in territory the Chaldeans already hold.

The visit came as the Lord had said, and only then does Jeremiah say he knew the word was from the Lord. Barnes infers that Hanamel was childless. Jamieson, Fausset and Brown cite Florus: while Hannibal besieged Rome, the ground under his camp found a buyer in the city.

The right of inheritance is thine - Hanameel therefore had no children, and at his death the land would have been Jeremiah’s by right of birth. According to the Law Num 35:5, it must have been part of the suburbs of Anathoth, within less than a mile, which was all the priests and Levites might cultivate.
