John 1:1-2

In the beginning was the Word: In the beginning was the Word: John opens by rewriting Genesis 1:1 around a person, and the three clauses of verse 1 carry the whole doctrine of Christ's deity, the Word already existing when the beginning began, the Word with God as a distinct person, and the Word was God as full deity stated flatly. The Greek of the third clause, theos without the article, has been the Arian battleground since the fourth century, and the grammar is stated honestly: the anarthrous predicate marks quality rather than a second god, so the rendering a god reverses the clause's actual force, which asserts everything God is, the Word is. Behind logos stand both the Hebrew word of the Lord that made the heavens (Ps 33:6) and the memra of the Targums, and John baptizes the term rather than borrowing a philosophy. Verse 2 repeats the eternal fellowship on purpose, the same was in the beginning with God, closing the circle before a single created thing is mentioned.

John 1:3-5

All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made: creation is predicated of the Word both positively and by exhaustive negation, the double form shutting every gap in which a created Christ could hide, since whatever was made, he made. In him was life, life underived and original, and the life was the light of men, the two nouns that will run the whole Gospel introduced as one gift. The light shineth in darkness, present tense, and the darkness comprehended it not, where the Greek katelaben carries both senses the English has needed two words for, understood it not and overcame it not; the bench keeps both, ignorance and resistance, and the Gospel will dramatize each. Verse 5 is the book's plot stated in one line.

John 1:6-8

There was a man sent from God, whose name was John: the eternal clauses give way abruptly to a man with a name and a commission, and the commentators note the deliberate drop in register, was made against simply was, a man against the Word. His whole office is witness, the word martyria sounding here for the first of the Gospel's many times, that all men through him might believe. He was not that Light: the correction is emphatic, and the bench reads in it the evangelist's care for the Baptist's disciples who lingered into the apostolic age (Acts 19:3), honoring the lamp precisely by refusing to confuse it with the sun.

John 1:9-11

That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world: the bench divides over the clause's construction, the older reading attaching cometh to every man, and the equally grammatical alternative attaching it to the Light coming into the world, the reading the following verses support; both are named and the theological weight is the same, no man is born beyond the Light's reach. He was in the world the world he made, and the world knew him not: three clauses that compress the whole tragedy of unbelief. He came unto his own, ta idia, his own things, the land and house of Israel, and his own people received him not, the Gospel's sorrow stated before its story begins, and the anti-supersessionism ruling holds the verse to what it says, a rejection by his own generation's leadership, with 4:22, salvation is of the Jews, standing in the same book.

John 1:12-13

But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God: over against the great refusal stands the great exception, and the verse defines receiving as believing on his name before the Gospel has told a single story. Power is exousia, right or authority rather than raw ability, sonship conferred as standing, not achieved as effort. Verse 13 closes every human door to it: not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God, lineage, desire, and decision all excluded as causes, the new birth stated here in the passive before Nicodemus hears it commanded in chapter 3. The bench reads the two verses as John's whole soteriology in miniature, grace received through faith issuing in birth from God.

John 1:14

And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us: the verse the church's whole doctrine of the incarnation stands on, and John chooses the blunt word, flesh, not merely a man or a body, against every docetism to come. Dwelt is eskenosen, tabernacled, pitched his tent, and the Exodus is deliberately in the word: the glory that filled the tent of meeting now dwells in a human life, and we beheld his glory answers Moses who was refused the sight. Full of grace and truth translates the covenant self-description of Exodus 34:6, abundant in goodness and truth, chesed and emet made flesh. The only begotten of the Father, monogenes, unique and only of his kind, guards the sonship of verse 12 from confusion: sons by grace behold the Son by nature.

John 1:15-17

John bare witness with the paradox that becomes his refrain, he that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me, later in ministry, earlier in being, the Baptist's own testimony to preexistence. Of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace: the phrase charin anti charitos, grace in place of grace, is read by the bench as wave following wave, one grace exchanged for the next as from an unemptiable store. Verse 17 states the two economies without disparaging the first: the law was given by Moses, gift language for Sinai too, but grace and truth came, egeneto, came into being as historical fact, by Jesus Christ, the first time the Gospel writes the name. Moses is honored as the giver of a true gift fulfilled, not corrected, by the greater one.

John 1:18

No man hath seen God at any time: the prologue closes by guarding the divine invisibility that every Sinai and temple vision approached but never breached, and then gives the one exception, the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him. The oldest witnesses read monogenes theos, only begotten God, and the received text reads only begotten Son; both readings are stated honestly and either way the verse ascribes to Christ what verse 1 ascribed, since only God can exegete God, and declared is exegesato, the word from which exegesis comes. In the bosom of the Father is present tense intimacy, not a memory of it, and the bench reads the clause as the prologue's last answer to how the Word could be both with God and God: the Son declares from inside the fellowship he never left.

John 1:19-23

This is the record of John: the narrative opens as a deposition, priests and Levites sent from Jerusalem asking Who art thou, and the Gospel's trial structure begins with the witness on the stand. He confessed, and denied not, the double form underlining the integrity: I am not the Christ, not Elias, not that prophet, the three denials descending in rank, and the bench notes he refuses even the Elijah title Jesus later assigns him in office (Matt 11:14), answering for his person rather than his prophetic role, both truths standing. Pressed for a positive answer he gives himself no noun at all, only Isaiah 40:3's voice: a voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord. The forerunner's self-effacement is itself his credential.

John 1:24-28

The delegation were of the Pharisees, and their question, why baptizest thou then, has teeth, : baptism as John practiced it looked like proselyte washing applied to Israel itself, implying the covenant people needed what Gentiles needed, and only an authorized figure could impose it. John answers by deflection to a presence: I baptize with water, but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not, the Messiah already in the crowd unrecognized, and the latchet saying gives the measure, unworthy of the slave's task at his sandal. Bethabara beyond Jordan, house of the crossing, sets the scene where Israel first entered the land, and the commentators note the geography preaches, the new beginning staged at the old threshold.

John 1:29-31

Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world: the next day's cry gathers the whole sacrificial system into a title, the Passover lamb, the morning and evening lamb of the daily offering, Isaiah 53:7's lamb led to slaughter, and Abraham's God will provide himself a lamb, and the bench declines to pick one stream because the title claims them all. Taketh away, airon, is present tense and bearing-away, expiation in a participle, and the object is the sin of the world, singular and universal, the Gospel's scope announced at the Jordan. John repeats his preexistence refrain, for he was before me, and confesses his own prior ignorance, I knew him not, his commission having been to baptize until the sign should identify the One.

John 1:32-34

I saw the Spirit descending: I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him: the Baptist gives his evidence, and the identifying mark is not the descent alone but the remaining, menon, the abiding that becomes the Gospel's own word for fellowship. The one on whom the Spirit remains is the one who baptizeth with the Holy Ghost, the forerunner's water answered by the Coming One's Spirit, the promise the site's own tradition receives at Pentecost and beyond. And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God: the chapter's witness structure reaches its verdict, and the title that opened the prologue in eternity is now sworn to by a man who watched it descend at a river.

John 1:35-39

two of his disciples: Again the next day John stood with two of his disciples, and his repeated Behold the Lamb of God costs him both: they leave the Baptist to follow Jesus, the forerunner's success measured in his own decrease. Jesus' first words in this Gospel are a question every reader is meant to hear as addressed to himself, What seek ye, and their answer asks not for a doctrine but an address, Rabbi, where dwellest thou. Come and see is the Gospel's method stated as an invitation, evidence by acquaintance, and they abode with him that day; it was about the tenth hour, the timestamp of a man who never forgot the afternoon his life turned.

John 1:40-42

One of the two was Andrew, and he first findeth his own brother Simon with the announcement that names the book's thesis in a sentence, We have found the Messias, which John translates for his Greek readers, the Christ. And he brought him to Jesus: the bench honors Andrew as the first home missionary, a man remembered in this Gospel almost solely for bringing people, his brother here, the lad with the loaves later, the Greeks at the end. Jesus beheld Simon and renamed him on sight, Thou shalt be called Cephas, a stone, character spoken over the least stable of the apostles years before it was true, and the commentators read the renaming in the line of Abram and Jacob, a destiny conferred at meeting.

John 1:43-46

The day following Jesus findeth Philip, the one call in the chapter Jesus initiates directly, two words, Follow me, and Philip immediately reproduces the pattern, findeth Nathanael. His announcement stakes the claim the whole Old Testament program of this site is built to trace, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, and then hands skepticism its most quoted line, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth. Philip answers argument with invitation, Come and see, the same words Jesus used, and the bench holds the exchange up as the abiding apologetic: honest doubt is not scolded, it is walked to the evidence.

John 1:47-49

Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile: Jesus greets Nathanael with a deliberate Jacob contrast, an Israel without the supplanter's deceit, and the fig tree saying shows him he was known before he was called, Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee. The fig tree was the rabbis' own figure for the place of Torah meditation, and Lightfoot's parallels suggest Nathanael was found at prayer or study he had told no one of; whatever he was doing there, being seen unseen breaks him open. His confession outruns everyone in the chapter, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel, the guileless Israelite the first to crown Israel's King.

John 1:50-51

greater things than these: Thou shalt see greater things than these, Jesus answers the confession, and the chapter closes with its first Verily, verily and its widest window: Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man. The sentence rewrites Jacob's ladder at Bethel around a person: what Jacob saw as a stairway between heaven and earth, Nathanael will find in the Son of man himself, the one mediator on whom the traffic of heaven moves. The bench notes the title chosen for the promise, Son of man, Daniel 7's figure and Jesus' own self-name, appearing here for the first of the Gospel's uses, and the promise's plural ye widens it past Nathanael to every disciple: the chapter that began with the Word with God ends with heaven standing open over him made flesh.
