Behold, I will gather them out of all countries,.... At the end of the seventy years' captivity; and which will have a greater accomplishment in the latter day, when the Jews shall be converted, and gathered from their present dispersion all over the earth: whither I have driven them in mine anger, and in my fury, and in great wrath: or "whither I shall drive them", or "shall have driven them" (m); for as yet they were not thus driven and dispersed.

on Jeremiah 32:36-41

“Now therefore” turns the oracle from indictment to promise. The everlasting covenant gives “one heart and one way,” so obedience is a gift, as in the new covenant of chapter 31. Verse 41 names the LORD's gladness, in words rare in the book: “I will rejoice in doing them good.”

I will surely gather My people

Gill points out that the scattering had not yet happened when this was spoken; the city still stood under siege. He reads the gathering as the return after seventy years, with a fuller one still to come for the Jews. Clarke links the promise to Jeremiah 29:14 and 31:8.

(Verse 37 and following) Behold, I will gather them from all the lands to which I have driven them in my anger, in my wrath, and in great indignation, and I will bring them back to this place and make them dwell securely. They will be my people, and I will be their God. And I will give them one heart and one way, that they may fear me forever, for their own good and for the good of their children after them.

God's judgments came gradually upon them, but, they not meeting him by repentance in the way of his judgments, he proceeded in his controversy till all was laid waste, which was in the eleventh year of Zedekiah; now what is here recorded happened in the tenth.

They had been under God's anger and fury, and great wrath; but now they shall partake of his grace, and love, and great favour. He had dispersed them, and driven them into all countries.
