Behold the mounts - The huge terraces raised up to plant their engines on, that they might throw darts, stones, etc., into the city. Because of the sword, and of the famine, and of the pestilence - The city was now reduced to extreme necessity; and from the siege continuing nearly a year longer, we may conclude that the besieged made a noble defense.

Jeremiah's prayer opens with creation, then moves through the exodus and Israel's disobedience. That history ends in the present siege, where “the city has been given into the hands of the Chaldeans.” Verse 25 sets the LORD's command, “Buy for yourself the field with silver,” beside that fact.

Clarke explains the ramps as great earthworks from which the besiegers threw darts and stones into the city. The city held out nearly a year longer. Matthew Henry notes that Jeremiah neither complains of God nor tells him what to do; he asks only that the Lord see it.
