Jeremiah's prayer opens with creation, then moves through the exodus and Israel's disobedience. That history ends in the present siege, where “the city has been given into the hands of the Chaldeans.” Verse 25 sets the LORD's command, “Buy for yourself the field with silver,” beside that fact.

The prayer turns from God's great power to His eyes on all the ways of men. Matthew Henry pictures a judge who sees every step and gives each one the fruit of his deeds. Jerome adds that no man can hide his ways from God.

Let the chaff of a fickle faith fly off as much as it will at every blast of temptation; all the purer will be that heap of corn that shall be laid up in the garner of the Lord.
