Luke 23:1-2

The whole multitude of the Sanhedrin arose and led Jesus to Pilate, and their accusation is a study in translation from religious charge to political crime, for the council had condemned him for blasphemy but Rome does not try blasphemy. So they bring three counts before the governor: perverting the nation, forbidding tribute to Caesar, and claiming to be Christ a King. The bench notes the second charge is a flat lie, since Jesus had just told them to render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and the third twists messiahship into sedition.

Luke 23:3-4

Pilate asked him, Art thou the King of the Jews, and Jesus answered, Thou sayest it, an affirmation cast in a form that refuses Pilate's political sense of the word while not denying the truth of it. Pilate's verdict follows at once, I find no fault in this man, the first of three explicit acquittals Luke records from the Roman governor's own mouth. Ryle observes that Luke, writing for a Gentile audience under Roman rule, is careful to record that Rome's own judge found no basis for the charge.

Luke 23:5-6

The chief priests grow more fierce and add Galilee to the charge, he stirreth up the people, teaching throughout all Jewry, beginning from Galilee, and the word Galilee catches Pilate's ear as a way out. He asks whether the man is a Galilean, and the question is jurisdictional rather than curious, a governor looking to hand off a case he does not want. Clarke notes this is the only mention in the trial of where Jesus is from, and it is the accusers who volunteer it, not Jesus.

Luke 23:7-8

he sent him to Herod: Learning Jesus belonged to Herod's jurisdiction, Pilate sends him to Herod, who happened to be in Jerusalem for the feast, and Herod was exceeding glad, for he had long desired to see him and hoped for a miracle as entertainment. This is Herod Antipas, the same tetrarch who had beheaded John the Baptist and whom Jesus once called that fox, and his gladness here is the gladness of a man seeking a show, not a seeker of truth. Wesley observes the contrast: Pilate wants Jesus off his hands, Herod wants Jesus for a spectacle, and neither wants him for who he is.

Luke 23:9-10

Herod questions him in many words, but Jesus answered him nothing, the Lord's total silence before this one judge alone in the whole passion narrative. The bench reads the silence as fulfillment of Isaiah 53:7, as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, and as a judgment on Herod specifically, a man who had already rejected the greater light of John's preaching and now stands before the Light himself asking for magic tricks. Meanwhile the chief priests and scribes stand by and vehemently accuse him, filling the silence Jesus refuses to fill.

Luke 23:11-12

Herod and his soldiers set Jesus at nought, mock him, array him in a gorgeous robe likely meant to lampoon royal claims, and send him back to Pilate, and the same day the two former enemies are made friends. Luke alone records this reconciliation, and the bench connects it to Psalm 2:2, the kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the Lord and against his anointed, and to Acts 4:27 where the early church prays that very psalm over these two men by name. Ambrose calls the friendship a dark irony, Herod and Pilate united only in their treatment of the innocent.

Luke 23:13-16

called together the chief priests: Pilate calls together the priests, rulers, and people and delivers his second explicit acquittal: I, having examined him before you, have found no fault in this man, no, nor yet Herod, for nothing worthy of death is done unto him. Twice now Rome's own process has cleared Jesus, and the governor's proposed compromise, I will therefore chastise him and release him, is itself an injustice, since a man found guilty of nothing should not be scourged at all. Henry calls this the first crack in Pilate's resolve, a man who knows the right verdict but is already looking for a way to avoid pronouncing it in full.

Luke 23:17-19

Luke notes the custom that Pilate must release one prisoner at the feast, and the crowd cries out for Barabbas, a man cast into prison for sedition and murder committed in the city. The name itself carries weight the bench does not let pass unnoted, Bar-abba, son of the father, set free in exchange for the true Son of the Father, a substitution the earliest readers would have felt at once. The choice is the whole gospel in miniature, the guilty released and the innocent condemned in his place.

Luke 23:20-23

Pilate speaks again, willing to release Jesus, but the crowd cries Crucify him, crucify him, and Pilate asks a third time, Why, what evil hath he done, delivering his third explicit acquittal, I have found no cause of death in him. Yet the voices of the people and the chief priests prevail, and Luke's repeated third pattern, matching Peter's threefold denial and the threefold temptation, marks a governor who knows the truth three times over and yields to the crowd anyway. JFB observes that Pilate's own question, unanswered by the mob, stands as the verdict of history even as the mob's noise carries the day in the moment.

Luke 23:24-25

Pilate gives sentence as they required, releases the man guilty of sedition and murder, and delivers Jesus to their will, Luke's blunt closing line on the trial. The bench notes the double injustice condensed into one verse, a murderer freed and the sinless one condemned, and reads it as the pattern of the atonement itself, the guilty going free because the innocent bears the sentence in his place. Calvin observes that Pilate's formal legal authority makes the miscarriage of justice a matter of public Roman record, not merely a private grievance of the Jewish leaders.

Luke 23:26

As they lead Jesus away they lay hold on Simon of Cyrene, coming in from the country, and compel him to bear the cross behind Jesus, a detail Mark preserves further by naming his sons Alexander and Rufus, likely known to Mark's first readers. Cyrene was in North Africa, and the bench takes Simon as very likely a Jew of the diaspora come up for Passover, an unwitting participant pressed into the one act of cross-bearing the Gospels literally record. Bede reads Simon's compelled service as a picture of every disciple later called to take up a cross he did not choose.

Luke 23:27-29

A great company of people and women follow, bewailing and lamenting, and Jesus turns to say, Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children, for days are coming when the barren will be called blessed. This scene is unique to Luke, consistent with his thread of naming women throughout the Gospel, and the Lord's words look past his own suffering to the coming judgment on the city, a grief so severe that childlessness, normally a curse in Israel, will be counted a mercy. The bench reads this alongside the lament of 19:41-44 and 13:34-35 as the same warning restated at the very door of the cross.

Luke 23:30-31

Fall on us: The words to the mountains, Fall on us, and to the hills, Cover us, echo Hosea 10:8 almost verbatim, and John later reuses the same cry for the terror of the last day in Revelation 6:16. The green tree and dry tree saying that follows, if they do these things in a green tree, what shall be done in the dry, argues from the lesser to the greater: if Rome and the leaders treat the innocent, life-bearing one this way, what will befall a nation already dry and ripe for judgment. Gill takes the green tree as Christ himself, full of sap and life, and the dry tree as the guilty nation that rejects him.

Luke 23:32-33

Two other malefactors are led out with him, and at the place called Calvary, from the Latin for skull, the same as the Aramaic Golgotha, they crucify him between the two, one on the right hand and one on the left. Luke states the fact of the crucifixion with almost no description of the physical agony, a restraint the bench across the tradition reads as deliberate, letting the reader's own knowledge of the practice supply what the text does not dwell on. The location outside the city wall, per Hebrews 13:12, and the placement between two criminals fulfills Isaiah 53:12, numbered with the transgressors, a text Jesus himself quoted of his own coming death at 22:37.

Luke 23:34

Father, forgive them: Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do, words absent from some of the earliest manuscripts including Vaticanus and the original hand of Sinaiticus, though quoted or alluded to early enough by Irenaeus and others that many textual critics judge them authentic even if a later insertion from oral tradition. The site presents the received text at full strength: whichever the manuscript history, the prayer stands consistent with everything else Luke shows of Jesus's character, and with Stephen's own echo of it in Acts 7:60. The soldiers parting his garments and casting lots fulfills Psalm 22:18 even as the prayer for forgiveness is being prayed over their heads.

Luke 23:35

The people stand watching while the rulers deride him, He saved others, let him save himself, if he be Christ, the chosen of God, a taunt that unknowingly states the gospel backward. The bench notes the cruel logic of the mockery, that the very miracles that proved his power are twisted into proof against him, since the one thing his mission required was that he not save himself. The title the chosen of God recalls the voice at the transfiguration, this is my beloved Son, hear him, now thrown at him as an insult.

Luke 23:36-38

The soldiers join the mockery, offering vinegar and taunting, If thou be the king of the Jews, save thyself, while a superscription in Greek, Latin, and Hebrew is set over him, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS. The three languages, the common tongue, the imperial tongue, and the sacred tongue, mean the charge Pilate intended as mockery is read by every passerby regardless of nation, and the bench across the ages has taken it as providence overruling Pilate's spite into a universal proclamation of the very truth he refused to retract. John records Pilate's answer to the priests' protest, what I have written I have written, a small but telling note of the same stubborn honesty seen throughout the trial.

Luke 23:39

One of the malefactors hanged beside him rails on him, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us, the same taunt as the rulers and soldiers now coming from a dying man's own cross. Matthew and Mark record both thieves reviling him at first, and the bench reads Luke's fuller account as showing one thief's heart changing in the course of the hours on the cross, a conversion happening in real time before the reader's eyes. The taunt still centers on saving himself, the one thing the gospel required Jesus not to do.

Luke 23:40-41

The other malefactor rebukes his companion, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation, and confesses both the justice of his own sentence, we receive the due reward of our deeds, and the innocence of Jesus, this man hath done nothing amiss. This is the clearest human testimony to Christ's innocence in the whole passion, spoken by a condemned criminal with nothing to gain by it, and the bench sets it beside Pilate's threefold acquittal and the centurion's confession at verse 47 as the fourth voice in Luke clearing Jesus before he dies. Spurgeon preached this thief's confession as saving faith stripped to its bare essentials, fear of God and honest acknowledgment of sin.

Luke 23:42-43

Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom, the thief asks, and Jesus answers, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise, salvation granted to a dying man with no time left for any work but faith. The bench notes the punctuation question some readers raise, whether to read to day as modifying I say rather than shalt thou be, a reading history has associated with a minority position rejecting the intermediate state; the great majority reading, followed by the Greek word order and the earliest translations, takes to day with paradise, promising the thief Christ's own presence that same day. Paradise, a Persian loanword for a walled garden, recalls Eden and looks to Revelation 2:7's tree of life, and this is the last of Luke's eleven this-day sayings, salvation arriving in the present tense to the very last hour.

Luke 23:44-45

About the sixth hour, noon, a darkness falls over all the land until the ninth hour, three in the afternoon, and the sun is darkened while the veil of the temple is rent in the midst. Ancient historians including Thallus, writing within decades of the event, are cited by later Christian writers as reporting an unusual darkness in this period, though a natural eclipse is impossible at Passover's full moon, leading commentators to treat it as a supernatural sign rather than an astronomical one. The veil torn from top to bottom, the direction Matthew and Mark both specify, signals that the way into the holiest of all, once barred to all but the high priest one day a year, stands open through the body of Christ, the very argument Hebrews 10:19-20 makes explicit.

Luke 23:46

Crying with a loud voice, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit, Jesus quotes Psalm 31:5 nearly word for word and then gives up the ghost, an act John's Gospel calls laying down his life of himself, no man taking it from him. The loud voice itself, noted by all three Synoptics, argues against death by simple exhaustion and for a death given up by an act of will at the moment the work was finished. The bench reads the return to a psalm of trust as the Lord's last recorded prayer before the fourth, the first being at Gethsemane, the second the cry of dereliction the other Gospels record, the third the word to the thief, framing the crucifixion in prayer from Gethsemane to Golgotha.

Luke 23:47

The centurion, seeing what was done, glorifies God, saying, Certainly this was a righteous man, Luke's own wording of the confession Matthew and Mark render truly this was the Son of God. The bench does not force the two into artificial identity but notes both point the same direction, a hardened Roman execution officer, who had likely overseen many crucifixions and knew what dying men usually looked and sounded like, reaching a verdict opposite to the one the Sanhedrin had reached hours before. Cyril reads the centurion, a Gentile, as the first fruits of the nations Luke's whole Gospel has been preparing the reader to expect.

Luke 23:48-49

The crowds that came to watch the spectacle go home smiting their breasts, a Jewish gesture of grief and confession, while his acquaintance and the women who followed from Galilee stand afar off, watching. Luke names no individual woman here but keeps the group in view, consistent with his running attention to the women, and the phrase afar off signals grief that has not yet found the courage of the two men who will step forward next. The crowd's turning from mockery to breast-beating is itself a small foreshadowing of the repentance Peter will call for at Pentecost.

Luke 23:50-51

Joseph, a counsellor, a good man and a just, had not consented to the counsel and deed of the Sanhedrin and himself waited for the kingdom of God. As a member of the council that condemned Jesus, his dissent, confirmed here and by Mark, shows the Sanhedrin's verdict was not unanimous, and John adds that Joseph was a disciple secretly, for fear of the Jews, a fear the burial he is about to perform will publicly overcome. The bench reads waited for the kingdom of God as marking Joseph among the quiet, faithful remnant Luke has shown throughout, Zacharias, Simeon, Anna, now Joseph, watching for the same hope.

Luke 23:52-53

Joseph goes to Pilate and begs the body of Jesus, an act requiring real courage and standing, since asking for the corpse of a man condemned for sedition risked the asker's own reputation with Rome. He takes it down, wraps it in fine linen, and lays it in a rock-hewn tomb wherein no man had yet been laid, fulfilling Isaiah 53:9's with the rich in his death even as he was numbered with transgressors in his dying. John records Nicodemus joining him with a great weight of spices, two secret disciples finally acting in the open once their Lord is dead.

Luke 23:54-56

It was the preparation day and the sabbath drew on, so the burial is hurried, and the Galilean women who had followed him mark where and how the body was laid before going home to prepare spices and ointments. They then rest the sabbath day according to the commandment, Luke's quiet notice that even in grief the law is honored, and their careful observation of the tomb's location is what allows them to return at first light and discover it empty, the very next scene the chapter's silence leaves waiting.
