4 notes on this verseTheir fathers had such a value for Canaan that they desired to have their dead bodies carried thither to be buried, in token of their dependence upon God's promise that they should have that land for a possession: but these, having despised that good land and disbelieved the promise of it, shall not have the honour to be buried in it, but shall have their graves in the wilderness.

The thing they said would be lost is the thing that is kept. Their children go in, and the verse quotes the parents' own phrase back at them as it says so. The generation that would not go dies where it stood and the generation it feared for inherits.

Which way of speaking seems to be used to distinguish them from their children: they shall fall in this wilderness: which is repeated for the confirmation and certainty it, and an emphasis is laid on the words, this which are pronounced with an accent, to put them in mind of their wish, Num 14:2.
