And it follows): What Jeremiah the Prophet spoke to all the people of Judah and to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying. In the fourth year of the reign of King Jehoiakim, son of Josiah and father of Jeconiah, Nebuchadnezzar became the ruler in Babylon, and it happened that the year which was the first for Nebuchadnezzar in Babylon was the fourth for King Jehoiakim in Jerusalem.

The date is doubled, since “the fourth year of Jehoiakim” was also “the first year of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon.” Verse 3 counts from “the thirteenth year of Josiah,” to this day, “twenty-three years” in which, Jeremiah says, “you have not listened.” Keil places the year at 605 BC.

Jeremiah speaks to the whole nation at once, “all the people of Judah and all the residents of Jerusalem.” Jerome notes that the Greek Bible leaves out the words about the first year of Nebuchadnezzar in verse 1. By his count, that year was the fourth of Jehoiakim.
