Isaiah's vision opens against Judah and Jerusalem in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah. Jehovah summons heavens and earth as witnesses: the ox knows its owner, but Israel does not know its God. The nation is sick from head to foot, its land desolate and cities burned; only a remnant keeps it from becoming Sodom and Gomorrah. Jehovah rejects its sacrifices, feasts, and blood-stained prayers, demanding instead justice for the oppressed, the fatherless, and the widow. He extends the summons "Come now, and let us reason together": scarlet sins made white as snow. The faithful city has become a harlot, her princes companions of thieves; Jehovah will purge her dross, restore her judges, and redeem Zion with justice, while transgressors burn with none to quench.
