The priests of the high places came not up - As these priests had offered sacrifices on the high places, though it was to the true God, yet they were not thought proper to be employed immediately about the temple; but as they were acknowledged to belong to the priesthood, they had a right to their support; therefore a portion of the tithes, offerings, and unleavened bread, shew-bread, etc., was appointed to them for their support. Thus they were treated as priests who had some infirmity which rendered it improper for them to minister at the altar.

The priests of the high places "from Geba to Beersheba" are brought to Jerusalem. Verse 9 keeps them from "the altar of the LORD", the law's treatment of a priest disqualified by blemish, fed but kept from the altar.

Deuteronomy 18:6-8 allowed a Levite from the towns to serve at the chosen altar and eat equal portions there. Adam Clarke explains that these priests had sacrificed on the high places to the LORD himself, so they kept their priestly support. They kept the bread and lost the altar.
