John 14:1

Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me, Jesus opens the discourse by naming the very grief his own announcement of betrayal and departure has just produced, and answers it not with distraction but with an object for faith. Believe is the same verb John's whole Gospel has been built on since 1:12, now aimed at a specific comfort rather than a general doctrine, trust in God extended to trust in the Son as its equal object. The bench reads the verse as the doorway into everything that follows, three chapters of promise offered as the cure for a trouble the Lord takes seriously rather than dismisses.

John 14:2-3

In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you, the Greek monai meaning abiding places rather than the separate architectural rooms the English mansions suggests, and the bench reads the word as promising ample room rather than grand furnishing. I go to prepare a place for you gives the departure Jesus has just announced a purpose that turns loss into preparation, and the promise closes on reunion rather than absence, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. The bench notes the whole verse answers the trouble of verse 1 directly, the place being with him rather than merely near him.

John 14:4-5

And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know, Jesus assumes an understanding the disciples do not yet have, and Thomas, refusing to fake comprehension, speaks for the room, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way? The bench honors Thomas here as it will honor him again at the resurrection, a man whose honest doubt draws out an answer the whole church has needed rather than a rebuke that shuts the question down. His confusion is the hinge that produces the verse every reader of this chapter remembers.

John 14:6

Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me, the fourth of the Gospel's great I AM sayings with predicates, and the bench notes the three nouns are not three separate offers but one claim unfolded, he is the way because he is the truth about God and the life God gives, so that reaching the Father has no route around him. No man cometh unto the Father, but by me states the exclusivity plainly, and the church across every tradition on the site's roster, from Chrysostom preaching it in the fourth century to Spurgeon preaching it in the nineteenth, has read the verse as allowing no other approach to God, however sincere, that bypasses the Son. The verse answers Thomas' double question with a single person rather than a set of directions.

John 14:7

If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him, Jesus draws the conclusion the I AM saying makes necessary, since the way to the Father is the Son, knowing the Son already is knowing the Father, whether the disciples yet realize it or not. From henceforth marks a decisive turn, the years of following now counted as a real, if incomplete, acquaintance with God himself. The bench reads the verse as preparing directly for Philip's question in the very next breath, the disciples standing closer to the Father than they know.

John 14:8-9

Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us, asking for the kind of theophany Moses was refused (1:18), and Jesus answers with mild surprise at how much has still not landed, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? He that hath seen me hath seen the Father is among the most direct claims to deity in the whole Gospel, the Son's own person, not merely his teaching or his miracles, being the visible disclosure of the invisible God. The bench reads Philip's misplaced request as every generation's own temptation, wanting a sign beyond the one already given rather than seeing what stands in front of them.

John 14:10-11

Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Father in me? states the mutual indwelling the prologue asserted from eternity, now spoken as present, ongoing fact, and Jesus grounds his own words and works in it, the words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works. Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake offers two roads to the same conclusion, his own testimony or the evidence of what he has done, either sufficient on its own. The bench reads the double appeal as characteristic of this Gospel's whole method, word and sign together confirming one claim.

John 14:12-14

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father: the greater works are read by the bench not as more spectacular miracles but as greater in scope, the apostolic mission after Pentecost reaching nations Jesus' own earthly ministry, confined largely to Israel, did not reach in his lifetime. Whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do binds the promise to prayer offered in his name, not a formula appended to a request but an asking that aligns with his character and mission, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. The bench reads the repetition in verse 14 as emphasis rather than redundancy, the Lord underlining a promise the disciples would need most in the years just ahead.

John 14:15

If ye love me, keep my commandments: the sentence turns the discourse from promise to obedience in six words, love proven not by feeling but by keeping, the same standard the new commandment of 13:34 already named. The bench reads the verse as the hinge into the Paraclete sayings that follow immediately, obedience and the Spirit's coming bound together rather than treated as separate subjects, since the Comforter is given precisely to those who love him this way. Every clause in the rest of the chapter builds outward from this single condition.

John 14:16-17

And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever: another, allos, means another of the same kind, not a lesser or different sort of help, the Spirit continuing the very presence and ministry Jesus himself has been to the disciples. Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you names the coming shift from a Spirit who has been with the disciples to one who will be in them, a promise the site's continuationist confession reads as inaugurating the ongoing, present ministry of the Spirit in every believer since Pentecost. The bench notes for ever answers the temporary comfort of the Lord's own physical presence with a permanence that presence, bound by a body, could not offer.

John 14:18-20

I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you, orphanous in the Greek, literally orphans, the same tenderness that called the disciples little children in 13:33 now promising they will not be left fatherless. Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also gathers the resurrection appearances and the Spirit's coming into one promise of continued life shared between the risen Lord and his own. At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you widens the mutual indwelling of verse 10 to include the disciples themselves, the bench reading it as the clearest statement in the discourse of union with Christ as a present, not merely future, reality.

John 14:21

He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me, Jesus repeats the standard of verse 15 and adds a chain of consequence, love proven by obedience answered by the Father's own love and the Son's own self-manifestation. He that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him promises an experiential knowing beyond the intellectual assent verse 7 already granted the disciples, a disclosure the bench reads as available still to any obedient believer, not confined to the eleven in the room. The chain runs obedience to love to manifestation, each link supplied by grace rather than earned by effort.

John 14:22-24

Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, John is careful to distinguish, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world? the question assuming the public, visible kind of manifestation the nation still expected of its Messiah. Jesus answers by relocating the manifestation from spectacle to relationship, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him, the same word for abode, mone, translated mansions at verse 2, now describing the Father and Son making their home within the obedient believer rather than a place prepared elsewhere. He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings closes the exchange with the negative form of the same principle, the bench reading it as no harsh exclusion but a plain description of what love that is not obedience actually is.

John 14:25-26

These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you, Jesus marks the discourse as still incomplete, more remaining that his own bodily presence will not last long enough to deliver. The Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you gives the Spirit two distinct offices, fresh teaching and accurate recall, and the bench reads the second office as the very mechanism behind this Gospel's own existence, an aged apostle's memory of words spoken decades earlier preserved reliably by the promise made here. The Spirit's coming does not compete with Christ's own words but safeguards and completes them.

John 14:27

Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you, the ordinary Jewish farewell, shalom, filled with a content the world's version of peace, dependent on circumstance, cannot supply. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid returns to the chapter's opening command, now backed by three chapters of promise rather than asked as a bare instruction. The bench reads my peace as inseparable from the Son who gives it, a settled state resting on who he is and what he has secured rather than on the absence of danger, since the danger of Gethsemane and the cross is only hours away.

John 14:28-29

Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I, is the clause the Arian controversy leaned on hardest, and the orthodox answer, held by the bench from Chrysostom onward, reads it as the Son speaking in his incarnate, mediatorial role, the same person who claimed equality with the Father at 10:30 and full deity in the prologue now describing his humbled, sent condition rather than denying his nature; other readers through history have pressed the verse toward a lesser view of the Son, and the essentials flag applies wherever that reading is taken as settling the question against the deity Christ claims elsewhere in this very Gospel. And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye might believe repeats the pattern of 13:19, prophecy given in advance to steady faith rather than to satisfy curiosity.

John 14:30-31

Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me, the discourse turns abruptly toward Gethsemane, and the bench reads hath nothing in me as the claim behind the whole passion, Satan approaching a man in whom he can find no point of purchase, no sin to exploit as he found one in Judas at 13:27. But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do closes the chapter on obedience as the true motive of the cross, love for the Father rather than mere submission to circumstance, and the last words, Arise, let us go hence, move the whole company out of the upper room toward the garden with the discourse still, by the Lord's own account in chapters 15 and 16, unfinished.
