On the day after the Passover Israel "marched out defiantly" while Egypt buried its firstborn. Verse 4 adds what the Exodus account never gave, that "the LORD had executed judgment against their gods". It reports as done what Exodus 12:12 said would be done.

Egypt was burying its firstborn while Israel marched out. Jamieson, Fausset and Brown read the gods either as Egypt's rulers, whose firstborn died, or as the objects of its worship. John Wesley takes the second view, the sacred animals whose firstborn fell on the night of Exodus 12:29.
