Nine camps in nine verses carry nothing but names. They belong to the years under the sentence of chapter 14, which Deuteronomy 2:14 counts at thirty-eight. The record keeps the movements of a generation whose story the narrative had stopped telling.

Adam Clarke notes that Makheloth is a name found nowhere else in Scripture. Its site is unknown. Origen reads it as from the beginning, and he makes it the stage where the soul refers everything to him who was in the beginning.
