These first stages follow Exodus 12 to 16, from Succoth to Elim. The camp "by the Red Sea" at verse 10 is missing from Exodus, which moves from Elim to the Desert of Sin at Exodus 16:1. John Gill marks the omission.

Exodus 16:1 places the Desert of Sin between Elim and Sinai and dates the arrival to the fifteenth day of the second month. The quail and the manna were first given there, in Exodus 16. Adam Clarke reports that travellers crossed these plains in nine hours.

The Church Fathers1 voice
Sin means "bramble bush" or "temptation." Thus the hope of good things now begins to smile upon you. What is the hope of good things? The Lord appeared from the bush and answered Moses; and this became the beginning of the Lord's coming to the children of Israel. But it is not insignificant that Sin also means "temptation." For visions usually involve temptation. Sometimes an angel of wickedness disguises himself as an angel of light.
