Nine camps in nine verses carry nothing but names. They belong to the years under the sentence of chapter 14, which Deuteronomy 2:14 counts at thirty-eight. The record keeps the movements of a generation whose story the narrative had stopped telling.

Kehelathah appears only in this list. Adam Clarke calls it utterly unknown and judges unlikely the guess that it was the Keilah of 1 Samuel 23:1. Origen reads the name as sovereignty or staff, the stage where the soul has come to rule over the body.

From it they come to Macelath [Kehelathah], which is "sovereignty" or "staff." Power seems to be meant by both and that the soul has progressed so far as to rule over the body and to obtain by that the staff of power. Indeed, it is power not only over the body but also over the whole world that Paul means when he says, "By the cross the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world."
