Nine camps in nine verses carry nothing but names. They belong to the years under the sentence of chapter 14, which Deuteronomy 2:14 counts at thirty-eight. The record keeps the movements of a generation whose story the narrative had stopped telling.

Hashmonah appears only in this list. Adam Clarke reports the view that it is Azmon, which Numbers 34:4 sets on the southern border of the land beyond Kadesh-barnea. Origen reads the name as bone or bones, and so as strength and firm endurance.
